Ukraine was never going to join Nato, says ex-MI6 chief

Ukraine joining Nato was never a serious prospect, the ex-MI6 chief Sir John Sawers has told the Today programme. The idea of Nato expanding its membership to the border with Russia was one of the issues that Russian President Vladimir Putin had warned could be a trigger for war. Ukraine has included the aim of joining Nato in its constitution, but there is no timeframe for enacting the pledge.
