How the Bay of Pigs unfolded
Fifty years ago, on 16 April 1961, Cuba defeated a US-backed invasion force of exiles at the Bay of Pigs.
Fidel Castro then proclaimed Cuba a communist state and began to ally the country with the USSR.
Cuba is celebrating the anniversary with a big parade in Havana featuring some of the country's leading athletes.
Michael Voss revisited the site of the original invasion at Playa Giron, and met some of the people who were there at the time.
