UN: Alleged Syria toxic attacks 'serious escalation'

The UN Security Council has voiced concerns about an alleged chemical weapon attack which is believed to have killed hundreds of people in Syria.

After an emergency meeting Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson described Wednesday's events as a "serious escalation".

Opposition activists said that more than 1,000 people were killed after government forces launched rockets with toxic agents into the Damascus suburbs in the Ghouta region.

The Syrian government has denied the allegations, describing them as "illogical and fabricated".
