Strauss-Kahn refused bail on charges of trying to rape maid

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund, has been refused bail by a New York judge following charges of trying to rape a hotel chambermaid.

He denies any wrongdoing.

Hours before his appearance in court a French woman claimed she, too, was sexually assaulted by Mr Strauss-Kahn some years ago.

The IMF chief has been a key figure in dealing with Europe's debt crisis - and was due to attend Monday's meeting of finance ministers in Brussels.
