Heckingbottom: 'Nothing would fall for us'

Preston North End boss Paul Heckingbottom said he thought his side played well in their 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth.

"Nothing fell for us in the second half, I was pleased with the performance," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"Not our day, another deflection. We've conceded three goals [this season], two of them deflections, one of them an own goal.

"But the performance was strong again, difficult place to come here. I think the fact we were so dominant in the second half was credit to the players and how we approached it but nothing would fall for us."

Burnley manager Scott Parker will be devastated at the result but can take a lot of satisfaction with his side's overall display.

Outplayed for the first half an hour, Burnley eventually got to grips with their task and were the better side around both their goals.

Skipper Josh Cullen was excellent. It was pure bad luck he should be credited with United going in front as the ball struck him on the back as it flew out from thudding the crossbar.

Although it was Ruben Amorim shaking his head after Bryan Mbeumo had scored to put the home side 2-1 ahead, Parker must have been feeling pretty irritated as barely 60 seconds had elapsed since Lyle Foster had intelligently used the space afforded to him as he made his way into the box and found the net from Jacob Bruun Larsen's cross.

The narrowest of offside decisions cost Foster a second and Hannibal Mejbri also went close against his old club.

It did seem Jaidon Anthony would be taking the plaudits on the short journey back to Lancashire. Instead, he will be asking himself why he grabbed Amad's shirt.

'Disappointed and gutted' - Parker on Man Utd defeat

Scott Parker spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Burnley's defeat against Manchester United: "My thoughts are I'm disappointed, gutted, but immensely proud of the team. Our reaction second half, I am proud.

"The way the game ends, it is the way the game has gone - quadruple checking every minute. The on field decision, the referee didn't give the foul. Then we have re-reffed it, VAR seeing a clear and obvious error. It's not the ref, it's a fella 200-odd miles away in a box. That's the way the game has gone.

"It's a sterile game, a long time ago when you had the passion and celebration - now you are standing around and waiting."

On what he changed at half-time: "We started really slowly, in the second half we were a threat and really deserving of the goals. I am proud of the group. Structurally we changed it, we could not land on second balls and gain any momentum. Our distances were a lot better in the second half."

Lyle Foster also spoke to Match of the Day: "We put so much in, and in the end the decision doesn't go your way which I think is unfair. It was really soft, and with roles reversed is it given to us? I don't know. It is heartbreaking, but it is what it is.

"I don't understand how it [his goal] was offside, and I've looked at it a few times. But that is how the game is now with VAR."

On Burnley's performance: "The way we played first half was not a proper demonstration of our game. We were shaken with the game plan, second half we regrouped. We were able to make chances, score two of them, including one from the long throw."

    Did you know?

Burnley have kept just one clean sheet in their last 28 Premier League away games (v Fulham in December 2023), conceding 50 goals in those fixtures combined.

    Manchester United's lineup against Fulham

Ruben Amorim makes one change from the team that drew at Fulham last weekend, with Diogo Dalot slotting in at left wing-back in place of Patrick Dorgu.

New signing Benjamin Sesko is back on the bench after playing the full 90 minutes in Wednesday's EFL Cup shock at Grimsby.

Noussair Mazraoui make the matchday squad for the first time this season after recovering from the injury he had at the start of pre-season.

Manchester United XI: Bayindir, Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw, Diallo, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Dalot, Mbeumo, Mount, Cunha.

Subs: Onana, Mazraoui, Maguire, Zirkzee, Dorgu, Ugarte, Heaven, Sesko, Mainoo.

Scott Parker sticks with the same starting line-up that beat Sunderland last weekend.

That means a return to Old Trafford for Hannibal Mejbri, who made 13 first-team appearances for the Red Devils before moving to Burnley last summer.

Veteran defender Kyle Walker is likely to receive a frosty reception given his Manchester City links.

Burnley XI: Dubravka, Walker, Ekdal, Esteve, Hartman, Ugochukwu, Cullen, Bruun Larsen, Mejbri, Anthony, Foster.

Subs: Weiss, Worrall, Edwards, Tchaouna, Flemming, Ramsey, Sonne, Pires, Laurent.

Chris Sutton smiling on a yellow and black background with 'Sutton's predictions' written below his face

I haven't got a clue with this one, nothing would surprise me. I don't think there'll be a lot of goals in this game, but surely Manchester United need to bounce back with some kind of statement?

It's a bad week for United. They were played off the park by Grimsby in the first half and were ultimately humiliated. I know Ruben Amorim made eight changes but he threw the big guns on in the end and you don't know what sort of impact that loss will have across the club.

After Grimsby, I think Amorim is under huge pressure.

Burnley will be stubborn and resolute, and they do carry an attacking threat. Will Manchester United find a way? Something's telling me to pick United to win but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Burnley embarrassed them.

  6. Man Utd v Burnley: Key stats and talking pointspublished at 19:22 BST 29 August

Manchester United go in search of their first win of the season, taking on a Burnley side buoyed by last weekend's victory over Sunderland. BBC Sport takes a look at some of the key themes before Saturday's game.

United's EFL Cup exit to Grimsby, their first defeat against fourth-tier opposition in the competition, has increased the pressure on head coach Ruben Amorim, who has won just five league games this calendar year – three of them against teams now in the Championship.

United spent over £190m on attacking talent this summer, recruiting Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, but obvious flaws have yet to be addressed. Fitting the trio into Amorim's 3-4-2-1 formation means captain Bruno Fernandes has to be shoe-horned into a two-man midfield, a ploy that has rarely provided the right balance to United.

Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, meanwhile, struggled to deal with set-pieces in the Reds' opening two league games of the season. But last season's number one, Andre Onana, hardly pressed his claims for a recall at Blundell Park, gifting Grimsby a goal when he failed to claim a routine cross.

Amorim admitted on Wednesday "something has to change" and improvement is clearly overdue. His Premier League win percentage of 24.7% is the worst in the club's history, with no other permanent United manager having dropped below 50% in the competition.

Will Clarets deepen gloom at Old Trafford?

Burnley got their first win on the board last weekend courtesy of victory over fellow new boys Sunderland, meaning Scott Parker's side are vying to win consecutive top-flight matches for the first time since April 2022.

The Clarets have won just once away to United in the league since 1962 although they have only lost four of nine Premier League fixtures at Old Trafford, making them one of three visiting clubs – along with Chelsea and Manchester City – to have avoided defeat in over half of their games there.

They can now also call upon a player with plenty of winning experience at the Theatre of Dreams. Summer signing Kyle Walker has played in six Premier League victories at the stadium, a joint record for an away player.

Jeppe Okkels has left Preston North End after one season, joining Swedish club Djurgardens for an undisclosed fee.

The Denmark Under-21 international made 10 appearances for the Lilywhites last season, seven of them in the Championship, without scoring.

The highlight of his Deepdale stay was scoring two penalties in the dramatic 16-15 penalty shoot-out win over Premier League Fulham in the Carabao Cup.

He was loaned out to Aberdeen for the second half of the last season with an option to buy, but that was not exercised after he appeared 18 times for the Scottish Premiership side.
