  1. Wimbledon count draws in young politicospublished at 03:04 British Summer Time 5 July

    Stephen Menon
    Reporting from Wimbledon

On a brief wander out of the centre for coffee we stumbled across two gentlemen peeking through the open doors into the counting room

Adam and Chris, from Mitcham and Epsom respectively are both 24.

They said they wandered down because it was a historic night, and they wanted to see "democracy in action".

Both were very excited about the prospect of a Lib Dem candidate in Wimbledon, and spoke about volunteering next week

They'd even considered dm'ing Pippa maslin to see if they could get in as "friends or family" to watch it all happen.

  4. Apprentice reporter takes in the scene at 'nail-biting' Harrow countpublished at 02:58 British Summer Time 5 July

Reporter William Wandji sitting at press desk at Harrow count

I’m sitting at the media press desk for the Harrow East and West count.

A new experience for me, as both an apprentice Journalist and a first-time voter.

Nail-biting atmosphere here in Harrow - I’ve even been asked by Conservative activists whether I had any "BBC Intel".

I can confirm I don’t have any intel, but what I do have in front of me is an exit poll which suggests tonight could be clean sweep for Labour in the Harrow constituencies.

  13. Lib Dems hoping to gain two seats in Carshaltonpublished at 02:32 British Summer Time 5 July

    Barry Caffrey
    Reporting from Carshalton

Counting is well under way here at the Westcroft Leisure Centre in Carshalton. The hall is very orderly and quiet and the candidates haven’t arrived just yet.

Two counts are taking place – Carshalton & Wallington and Sutton & Cheam.

The Lib Dems are hoping to gain both seats. They are very confident of gaining Carshalton and Wallington – they lost this seat in 2019 by just 629 votes to the Conservatives. Bobby Dean is the Lib Dem candidate and helped run the Lib Dems last two London mayoral campaigns.

But Sutton and Cheam is the one to watch. Currently held by the Tories, could the Lib Dems get this seat? They remain hopeful but people in the hall here are reminding us of Reform UK who seem to be doing well here too.

We are expecting a result around 04:00 but of course that could change.

  14. Minister faces challenge as Croydon South count beginspublished at 02:26 British Summer Time 5 July

Counting has now got under way in Croydon South – a Conservative seat held by the policing minister Chris Philp since 2015.

In 2019, he won it with a sturdy majority of more than 12,000 votes, though the BBC’s exit poll suggests there is a 99% chance that he will lose it to Labour’s Ben Taylor.

The seat has only ever voted Conseravtive since it was created in 1974.

  18. Tories expecting to lose in Cities of London & Westminsterpublished at 01:59 British Summer Time 5 July

    Susana Mendonca
    BBC Radio London Political Reporter

Cities of London & Westminster count

Conservative activists I just spoke to at the Cities of London & Westminster count told me they are expecting to lose here.

They were singing the praises of the former Tory MP Nickie Aiken who decided to quit before the election so isn’t running here… so no incumbency factor for the Tories in this electoral battle.

The local council which had always been Conservative was won by Labour in 2022 so the tide has long been turning here.

But losing this parliamentary seat would be a huge physiological blow for the party.

This is a seat that’s been Conservative for its entire existence - it’s the seat where you find Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Westminster itself.

Could the King’s local MP be Labour by morning?

  19. Corbyn putting up a 'challenging' fight to Labourpublished at 01:54 British Summer Time 5 July

Labour sources are telling me the tussle in Islington North in London is "challenging" for them.

In other words, perhaps they could lose the seat to their former leader Jeremy Corbyn who is running as an independent.

Labour have held the seat for decades with Mr Corbyn as the Labour MP.

But having been kicked out, he decided to run on his own ticket.

Labour were desperate to beat him.

It is a fascinating subplot to the wider story tonight.

Could Mr Corbyn beat the party he used to lead and find himself back in Parliament but still on the opposition benches, as Labour win big nationally?

    Let’s see.

  20. Watch: London mayor on a new Labour governmentpublished at 01:49 British Summer Time 5 July

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been giving his reaction to the exit poll on BBC Radio London.

He says the country is “rewarding” Sir Keir Starmer for his efforts in reforming the Labour Party.

As well as holding seats in the capital, which stood at about two thirds going into the election, Khan says he expects Labour's presence to increase but is cautious of predictions the Conservatives will fall to the low single digits.

During his own campaign for London’s top job, Khan heralded the elections of himself as mayor with a Labour government as a “moment of opportunity”.

“For the last eight years we’ve had a Conservative putting obstacles in our way,” he tells the BBC. “I will be working with Keir straight away – I’ll probably be in touch with him today.”
