    They party has gained a seat to take their tally to 36, while UKIP has also gained two seats, doubling their number on the council.

    Labour now has two seats, the independents have two and the Greens have one.

    Liberal Democrat Peer, and Party President, Watford's Baroness Sal Brinton have been reflecting on the Lib Dems losses and the resignation of their leader Nick Clegg.

    She told BBC Three Counties Radio: "It's a bit like a tsunami has just rolled over the party. It's shocking, it's devastating to have a parliamentary party reduced to eight."

    Ex Peterborough City Council, external leader Marco Cereste has blamed the two-seat system in his ward for his loss in the local elections, saying people didn't realise they needed to vote twice.

    He told BBC Look East he believed people voted for the first Conservative on the slip - which alphabetically was Ray Bisby - and didn't realise they could also vote for him slightly lower down the paper.

    "It's a pretty logical explanation," he said. "Perhaps we should have done a better job of informing people and making sure that they're [the forms] really understood."

    Daniel Zeichner says he worries about what a Conservative government will mean "to some of the poorest and most vulnerable people" - and adds they "don't understand why people are at foodbanks" or "the kind of housing and cost of living issues that face people".

    But he adds Cambridge is the "powerhouse" of the region and he would work across party boundaries with Conservative MPs and councillors for what's best for Cambridge and Cambridgeshire.

    Back on to the general election. In the end, the so-called marginal seats in Beds, Herts and Bucks turned out to be anything but.

    In Stevenage, the night saw Stephen McPartland's Conservative majority increase to just shy of 5,000.

    Milton Keynes South, another key marginal, also reflected the national trends, with Iain Stewart cementing his position by adding 3,471 votes, giving him a majority of 8,672.

    Both had been major targets for Labour and had seen multiple visits by senior party figures.

    The Conservatives have retained Forest Heath District Council, but have lost one seat.

    They now have 22 seats, with two for UKIP, three for West Suffolk Independents and one for an independent.

    They have won 23 of the 40 seats available on the council.

    Norfolk South MP Richard Bacon held on to his Conservative seat with an increased majority.

    In an interview with BBC Look East (East), he said his priorities would be to concentrate on improving broadband, mobile phone coverage and affordable housing in rural areas.

    "..This is no landslide, we have got to govern in the interests of one nation," he said.

    For those that like fun with numbers - here's a fascinating look at how people voted in the general election in the west of the eastern region.

    Figures compiled by our local radio stations in Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire and Beds, Herts and Bucks show 51% of people voted Tory on Thursday compared to 48% in 2010. That equates to 1,059,201 votes - more than double the votes labour received.

    The big change is clear - Liberal Democrat support in this part of the country has dropped dramatically, with UKIP becoming the third most popular party. The stats show 2,093,251 people voted on Thursday, a similar turnout to 2010.
