  6. Conservatives concern?published at 01:22 British Summer Time 6 May 2016

    Ed Poole
Lecturer, Wales Governance Centre at Cardiff University

After their best-ever Senedd election result in 2011, the Conservatives start in second place in 18 constituencies across Wales.

Cardiff North is their best chance of a gain, with a 2.6% swing required to take the seat from Labour, while other prospective gains may come in Brecon and Radnorshire, where a 4.85% swing from the Lib Dems is required, and the Vale of Glamorgan where a 5.7% from Labour is needed to win.

Swings of 6.2% and 6.6% from Labour are required to take Delyn and Clwyd South respectively, while swings above 8% are needed for other targets such as the Vale of Clwyd (8.7%), Wrexham (8.95%) and Gower (9.10%).

From tonight's on-the-day poll, the projected constituency and regional list shares for the Conservatives would represent a slip back from their performance in 2011 and 2007.

Welsh Labour leader Carwyn Jones says the party fought the election "very hard" and could not have done any more.

He says it was good to welcome Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn earlier this week, but was "not going to pretend that it (anti-semitism) wasn't raised on the doorstep".

"It didn't come up much but people were concerned about it," he added.

  19. Plaid challengepublished at 00:40 British Summer Time 6 May 2016

    Ed Poole
Lecturer, Wales Governance Centre at Cardiff University

If the on-the-day poll is in any way correct, Plaid Cymru's constituency vote share will be at the same level as it was in 2011.

The challenge for the party in picking up seats is that they placed second in only nine constituencies at the 2011 election, and only two seats are winnable with a swing of less than 5% (Llanelli and Aberconwy).

The party's next best prospect, from 2011 data at least, is Caerphilly, where it would require a 9.65% swing from Labour.

Rhondda would require a swing of 16.85%. Gains for the party tonight might therefore be more likely to come from the regional lists, where their vote share in the on-the-day poll is up by 3.1% from the 2011 result.

The on-the-day poll gives Plaid Cymru the same regional vote share as in 2007 when they returned eight list members.
