Labour activists have been quietly telling us that their campaign had been confused, that they’ve been sent to the wrong seats to campaign.
Their sadness is visible and their questions about the future are inevitable.
While they won convincingly in Stockport, few Labour supporters were celebrating because of the dismal national picture.
Ahead of the announcement that they'd retained Cheadle, one Conservative activist even told me that he’s sorry that "Labour have fallen apart".
“We need to be scrutinised," he told me. "What will this democracy become?”
The Liberal Democrats, meanwhile, look visibly shaken. Some tell me their pledge to revoke Article 50 - stopping Brexit - was a mistake. But still many refuse to accept that Brexit is now inevitable.
