The venue for the Sefton Central count is looking more like the kind of place you'd go to for your work Christmas do.

That's maybe because it's at Aintree Racecourse. There are seven runners and riders in the night's big race by the way... the result is expected 02:00.

  11. What happens at the election counts?published at 22:44 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2019

As polling stations shut their doors many people get settled in front of the television to watch the drama unfold while others head to bed, perhaps checking their phones for updates and news of exit polls before turning the lights out.

But others are sitting in rows under bright strip lights in schools, town halls and sports centres, sorting and counting the ballot papers.

To help you plan your much-needed brew breaks and power naps, here is our list of the estimated declaration times.

It's worth pointing out that things can, and very often do, slip on election night, especially when the outcome is very close. Recounts obviously delay things too.

  16. Where the battle for the North West will be won and lost...published at 22:24 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2019

The North West is represented by 69 seats in the House of Commons. Breaking it down a bit, we have 27 from Greater Manchester, 16 from Lancashire, 15 from Merseyside, and 11 from Cheshire.

You'll no doubt have noticed that some constituencies have been talked about a lot more than others during the election campaign.

A lot of constituencies, including many on Merseyside and in Greater Manchester, rarely if ever change hands.

So the party bosses concentrate their time and resources on those which they think are genuinely up for grabs - the marginals.

We've got a couple of dozen or so here in the North West and the chances are that if you live in one of them you'll have seen a lot of leaflets, Facebook ads, and maybe even some candidates knocking on your front door in recent weeks.

  18. We're in for a long night...published at 22:14 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2019

At the BBC we are all encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle - everything in moderation and all that.

All that goes out of the window on election night though... as our colleague Gina from Radio Lancashire is only too ready to acknowledge... fair play for the apple though!
