  17. Hymn and support for nurses from Ian Paisleypublished at 05:14 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

Despite being returned easily in the DUP heartland of North Antrim, Ian Paisley has seen his majority nearly halved.

Ahead of making his speech, Mr Paisley sang a few bars of the hymn Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow.

Speaking about the campaign, he said: “It wasn’t about negativity, it wasn’t about cutting lumps out of each other."

He then turned his focus to the ongoing health crisis, and the need to restore Stormont.

"As the father of a nurse, I know what it is to see nurses overworked and underpaid," he said.

"I think that those messages about our health workers really have struck home to every single public representative.

"You would have to have a heart of stone if that did not strike home to you."

  18. Newry & Armagh: Sinn Féin holdpublished at 05:08 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

Mickey Brady has been re-elected as the MP for Newry & Armagh, with a decreased majority.

The Sinn Féin candidate beat the DUP's William Irwin by 9,287 votes, 3,202 votes less than his majority at the 2017 election.

Pete Byrne of the SDLP came third and the Alliance Party's Jackie Coade came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 5.9 percentage points since the last general election.

Nearly 51,000 people, 62.5% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

One of the six candidates, Martin Kelly (Aontú) lost his £500 deposit after failing to win 5% of the vote.
