    The counterpoint to the surge of the Alliance party seems to be another tough election for the Ulster Unionists.

    "I think by sitting on the fence it has ended up that they have lost people to the DUP and they are now losing people to the Alliance," said David Ford, former Alliance leader.

    "They used to say there is no need for the Alliance party, but look the world has changed because people are saying they want a different kind of Northern Ireland."

    Responding, former Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt called for people to give the the party's leader Steve Aiken "a break", noting he had only been in post for a few weeks.

    According to multiple sources, North Down is set to go to Alliance's Stephen Farry, beating the DUP's Alex Easton, according to the BBC's Robbie Meredith.

    Reporting from the Aurora Bangor count centre, he said it looks like Mr Farry is set to win by about 2,000 votes.

    "Earlier it seemed too tight to call... it is in keeping with the Alliance surge during the council election six months ago.

    "It does seem like Stephen Farry has come from a long way back to beat Alex Easton."

    The race in North Down is heating up, and looks to be coming down to a head-to-head between Alliance's Stephen Farry and the DUP's Alex Easton.

    Reporting from the Aurora Bangor count centre, the BBC's Robbie Meredith reports there could be "less than a thousand votes" in the final result.

    "The remain vote, Sylvia Hermon’s remain vote in this constituency, has come out for Stephen Farry. It looks like we are going to have a very, very close race," he said.
