  6. Cities Of London & Westminster: Conservative holdpublished at 03:19 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

Nickie Aiken has been elected MP for Cities Of London & Westminster, meaning that the Conservative Party holds the seat with an increased majority.

The new MP beat Liberal Democrat Chuka Umunna by 3,953 votes. This was more than Mark Field’s 3,148 vote majority in the 2017 general election. Former Streatham MP Chuka Umunna left the Labour party in Feb 2019 and with other MPs founded The Independent Group, which is now called The Independent Group for Change. In June 2019 he left TIG to join the Liberal Democrats.

Gordon Nardell of the Labour Party came third and the Green Party's Zack Polanski came fourth.

Voter turnout was up by 4.3 percentage points since the last general election.

Nearly 43,000 people, roughly two-thirds of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

Three of the six candidates, Zack Polanski (Green), Jill McLachlan (Christian Peoples Alliance) and Dirk van Heck (Liberal Party) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

Labour's Marsha De Cordove won then by 2,416, but has seen her majority increase to 5,668.

Conservative Party candidate Kim Caddy, cabinet member for housing at Wandsworth Council, received 21,622 votes.
