  11. London bucking the national trendpublished at 02:28 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

    Susana Mendonca
    BBC Radio London Political Reporter

London as ever bucks the national trend.

I’ve just watch Putney a Tory seat since 2005 switch to Labour on a night when, let’s face it, things aren’t exactly going well for the party nationally.

But Labour activists will take heart from this first London marginal to go their way.

Of course this is pro-remain land and the losing Tory candidate told me this win shouldn’t be seen as a vindication of Jeremy Corbyn but rather a rejection of Brexit in a remain seat

Earlier at the Cities of London and Westminster count, which is still awaiting a result, there were plenty of glum labour faces watching the news channel.

The exit poll boosted Tory hopes - a Conservative councillor in Westminster I spoke to told me he’d had his fingers burnt before with predictions but was hopeful the exit poll might be reflected in London.

    data pic

Labour have won the south London seat of Putney for the first time since 2005.

The Labour Party overturned a 1,554 vote majority to take the formerly Conservative-held seat.

Former Conservative education secretary Justine Greening announced she would step down at this election after she was expelled from her party for rebelling over Brexit.

The Remain voting seat has switched between Labour and Conservatives, tending to follow the leading party into government.

Labour's Fleur Anderson, a local councillor, becomes the new MP with 22,780 votes.

Speaking after the declaration, just before 2am at Wandsworth Civic Suite, Ms Anderson said: "This is a bright light in a dark night.

"I've been clear on my views throughout the campaign. Brexit will be damaging for Putney, for Southfields, for Roehampton and for the whole country, and we want to remain."
