  18. An election of ‘cheap slogans’published at 07:16 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

The electorate ‘wants to move forward’

Laura McAllister, professor of the Welsh Governance Centre told BBC Radio Wales: “In a very populist electoral climate, such as the one we’re in at the moment, a slogan as simple and clear as [“Get Brexit Done”] is going to get some traction with people who, incidentally, did vote Remain as well as people who voted leave and wanted their vote to be respected and acted upon…

“Any notion that this is an election that has healed some of the huge wounds that exist in our political society is nonsense. We’ve seen a very divisive campaign; we’ve seen a very simplified campaign with pretty cheap slogans."

Ms McAllister said people were "fed up with politics".

"They didn’t want an election and voted for options that allowed them to move forward as much as they can from that.”
