Is America 'not divided as it seems'?

President Obama recently said the US is not as divided as it seems. What do people at the RNC think? Ted, a Trump supporter, told the BBC Democrats try to divide people by race and keep them at war with each other. "Unless we make a stand, and stick together, we're not going to have a country," said Jim, a Trump supporter.

  2. What Republicans thought of Melania Trump's speechpublished at 00:36 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

Melania Trump's speech grabbed headlines for allegedly plagiarising portions of Michelle Obama's 2008 speech. But what did Republicans at the convention think of it?

"I thought her speech was fantastic," one delegate told the BBC. "If they found something with Melania's Trump's speech, that's their problem."

Another said people like her because she supports her husband.

It wasn't all positive - a Louisiana delegate said it was "disturbing".

Donald Trump Jr called it "one of the more surreal moments of my life" and said his nomination is "historic".

"It's a real movement, he's a real person who's gotten stuff done, and he wants to bring that to this country," he said.

  11. A look at tonight’s speakerspublished at 23:14 British Summer Time 19 July 2016

Paul Ryan gavels the convention into sessionImage source, EPA

The main action this evening will be to formally nominate Donald Trump, a process led by top Republican leaders in Congress -  Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, plus some additional speeches. Here’s who will be at the podium this evening:

    • Dana White, president of Ultimate Fighting Championship  - Mr White leads a mixed martial arts league that’s gained in popularity and television share in the past few years. He will reportedly speak about his personal friendship with Trump, developed after the businessman’s early support for UFC.
    • US Senator Ron Johnson  – Mr Johnson is up for re-election this year in Wisconsin, but he faces a tough challenge from the very Democrat he unseated from the Senate six years ago. He is one of the few at-risk Republican senators to speak at the convention and was previously the chief executive of a plastics firm.
    • Chris Cox, Executive Director of NRA Institute for Legislative Action – Mr Cox is one of the top gun lobby’s most active spokesmen, and is responsible for lobbying federal and state legislatures to act – and not act on gun legislation.
    • Chris Christie, Governor of New Jersey – Mr Christie, who was part of the crowded Republican field running for the Republican nomination, shocked many by being one of the first “mainstream” Republicans to endorse Trump.
    • Tiffany Trump and Donald Trump Jr – two of Trump’s five children will appear on stage this evening. Donald Trump Jr has a senior position in the Trump Organization and has been a close adviser to his father during the campaign. Tiffany recently graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and has a massive following on Instagram.
    • Ben Carson, Neurosurgeon – Mr Carson is another of the Republican also-rans, whose  personal story and conservative ideology made him briefly a front runner for the nomination. His demeanour during debates was in sharp contrast to Mr Trump’s but he has been a long-time supporter since dropping out of the race.

Republican National Committee spokesman Sean Spicer argued on MSNBC on Tuesday that the phrases in question in Melania Trump's speech were common and have often been used by pop singers and cartoon characters.

"Melania Trump said, 'You work hard for what you want in life,' Akon said, 'Work hard for what you get in life,' John Legend said, 'Work hard,'" Mr Spicer told MSNBC. "Melania Trump said, 'the strength of your dreams and the willingness to work for them,' Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said, 'This is your dream, anything you can do dream.'"

John Legend was quick to distance himself from the controversy throwing a Taylor Swift reference for good measure.

The Trump campaign has been accused of lifting portions of Michelle Obama's 2008 speech to the Democratic National Convention and using them in Melania Trump's remarks on Monday. Former Obama staff members were quick to note that Sarah Hurwitz, the woman who wrote Mrs Obama's 2008 speech also worked for Hillary Clinton's campaign in 2008. Ms Hurwitz told the Post that Mrs Obama was very involved in the writing process.

“She clearly said to me: ‘Okay, this is who I am. This is where I come from. This is my family. These are my values, and this is what I want to talk about at the convention,’ ” Ms Hurwitz recalled. “I realised then that Michelle Obama knows who she is, and she always knows what she wants to say.”

Cloaked in shadow, Donald Trump made a dramatic entrance to the Republican National Convention on Monday to the booming chorus of Queen's We Are the Champions. But the surviving members of the British rock band were far from flattered. Queen has joined several other pop acts including Adele who have told the campaign to stop playing their songs at events.

"Sony/ATV Music Publishing has never been asked by Mr. Trump, the Trump campaign or the Trump Organisation for permission to use `We are the Champions' by Queen. On behalf of the band, we are frustrated by the repeated unauthorised use of the song after a previous request to desist, which has obviously been ignored by Mr. Trump and his campaign,'' a statement from the band's record label read.
