  3. 'White elevators' draw scorn at RNCpublished at 23:01 British Summer Time 18 July 2016

Elevators dubbed "white" at the RNC drew a scorn from attendees and reporters. Apparently, the convention center was going for a patriotic theme with red, white and blue elevators, but the labeling did not go over well. Reportedly, staffers are still working on getting all the signs removed.

  6. Day one shows cracks in the Republican foundationpublished at 22:48 British Summer Time 18 July 2016

It may have been a last gasp. It may have been a death rattle. But the #NeverTrump forces demonstrated on Monday afternoon that there was still some life left in them.

Thanks to a bit of procedural nimbleness, the anti-Trump delegates temporarily ground proceedings at the 2016 Republican convention to a halt.

They did it by gathering petitions from nine states to request a formal roll call vote on adopting the rules that govern the convention. Those rules included a provision requiring delegates to stand by their pledge to support the candidate selected by their state’s primary or caucus process. With that particular rule in effect, Mr Trump easily would have the necessary number of delegates to win the nomination on Tuesday.

That set off a furious round of lobbying from pro-Trump forces to convince three delegations to reverse themselves, dropping the petitioning states below the seven necessary for a recorded vote under convention rules.

While it’s clear that the eventual adoption of the pro-Trump rules was never really in doubt, a roll-call vote would have been an embarrassing show of dissent from the delegates – something Trump’s team wanted to avoid at all costs.

Despite their best efforts, however, cracks in the Republican foundation were quite visible at the start of a week in which the party is desperate to put its best foot forward.

  7. BBC live on Facebook: Pro, Anti-Trump forces gather outside conventionpublished at 22:39 British Summer Time 18 July 2016

The BBC was live on Facebook outside of the convention center in Cleveland. There they met David Griffin, who wore a Make America Great Again hat and a Gun Owners for Trump pin.

"I think he will put America first, which is something we haven't had in a long time," he said. He complained that foreign students at his university have scholarships and he has to apply for student aid, which "isn't right".

He praised Mr Trump's idea for the wall and said it would keep America safer.

Another man outside of the convention, a former Bernie Sanders supporter, called Mr Trump a "xenophobic pseudo-fascist" with no political experience. "He's an egotistical maniac."

What is a roll call vote versus a voice vote?

State-by-state roll call votes are when all 2,472 of the convention delegates record their vote. Roll call votes are different from voice votes, where delegates cast their vote by shouting "aye" or "nay". The chair then selects which faction he or she thinks is the loudest group.

    Why were Republican delegates fighting?

Anti-Trump delegates wanted to force a roll call vote on a rules package that binds delegates to vote for the candidate who won their state's primary or caucus.

The Never Trump group hoped to vote down the rules and replace them with a new set that would allow delegates to vote for a candidate other than Mr Trump.

    What happened on the floor?

The group said they had a majority of signatures from at least 9 delegations as they erupted in protest on the floor. Many anti-Trump delegates shouted "roll call vote" while pro-Trumps responded with "USA" chants.

Congressman Steve Womack, the deputy permanent convention chair, declared the rules approved and walked off stage after the crowd screamed "ayes" and "nays".

Party officials then said three state delegations withdrew their support to have a roll call vote on the rules, which left the Never Trump delegates short of the signatures required to force the vote.

Multiple state delegations walked off the floor after the rules were passed twice by voice vote.

  9. Anti-Trump contingent convinced RNC 'cheated'published at 21:40 British Summer Time 18 July 2016

Some Anti-Trump delegates think that the RNC cheated by not allowing the roll call vote to go on.

  11. Chanting, chaos on RNC floorpublished at 21:28 British Summer Time 18 July 2016
