The Republicans have kept control of the Senate, with several races still to be decided.

Senator Pat Toomey's narrow victory over Democrat Katie McGinty, in Pennsylvania, pushed the party over the line.

It means the Republicans will continue to have control of both Houses of Congress.

If Donald Trump wins the White House, the party will have a clean sweep, making it easier for them to pass legislation.

  11. Republicans retain control of Housepublished at 06:04 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

    US CapitolImage source, Getty Images

The Republicans have clinched a majority in the House of Representatives, extending six years of control of the chamber, with Democratic gains looking modest, according to Associated Press.

Votes are still being counted but the Republicans have won at least 218 House seats, more than enough for a majority.

Fears among some Republicans that Donald Trump's divisive presidential candidacy would cost them seats down the ballot appear not to have been borne out for the most part.

Democrats' chances of retaking the Senate majority are, meanwhile, slipping away as Republicans hang onto key seats in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Indiana and Florida.

Democrats kept their seat in Nevada, where Catherine Cortez Masto's win will make her the first Latina US senator.

  12. Inside an unfolding political upsetpublished at 06:02 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

    Nick Bryant
    BBC New York Correspondent

Hillary Clinton’s supporters thought they’d arrived for a victory party, and the roofing at the convention centre in New York doubled as a metaphor – a giant glass ceiling ready, symbolically at least, to be shattered.

But under it the mood fast changed to concern and fretfulness as early all-important swing states, like Florida and Ohio, went to Donald Trump. But nervousness turned to utter disbelief as reliably blue Democratic states like Michigan and Wisconsin looked to be turning red.

The famed blue wall, which has made the Democrats so strong  in presidential politics, looked to be crumbling before their eyes. Now the mood is one of despair.

  13. Electoral college vs popular votepublished at 06:01 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

    Map of electoral college votes

Could Hillary Clinton win the popular vote but lose the electoral college? It’s entirely possible.

Polling guru Nate Silver, external has been warning about the possibility for months, noting that support for Clinton is strong in all the wrong places. She does well in states like Texas and Georgia, outperforming Obama’s support by impressive margins, but not enough to win.

In the winner-takes-all contest that is the electoral college, coming in a close second is worth exactly zero electoral votes.

Combine that with Clinton winning big in high-population states like California, and it’s enough create a situation where she can pull in large numbers of voters across the US - but not enough votes in the right places.

That could mean that come Wednesday, most Americans have voted for Clinton, but it’s Trump who takes the top prize.

    What is the electoral college?
