  4. Kate Winslet had no speech preparedpublished at 04:59

Best supporting actress winner Kate Winslet was so sure she wasn't going to win the award she didn't prepare a speech.

"I really am so shocked right now," she told reporters backstage.

“I’m still standing here and I keep thinking that maybe this is not really happening. I honestly, truthfully didn’t expect this at all."

So sure she would be unsuccessful, the star even went so far as to book a massage at 9pm, as she was expecting a quiet night in after the ceremony.

"I think I’ll have to cancel," she said.

Due to the longer speeches from before, Ricky Gervais had to hustle the cast and crew of The Revenant off stage, but director Alejandro G Inarritu managed to say:

    Quote Message

Thanks to all the native Americans who helped make this film possible. I cannot say how surprised I am and how proud I am to have survived this film with all these fellows.

DiCaprio received a standing ovation as he earned his second Golden Globe in three years.

"Wow! Thank you," he said."What an incredible honour."

"I have never had an experience like this in my entire life."

Paying tribute to his friend and British co-star Tom Hardy, and referencing the plot of the film, he said: "I know he would never bury me alone and leave me out in the cold like that."

And, with all the manners of a first-time winner, Larson - who was being unceremoniously played off - added: "I'm sorry to anyone I forgot, I'll write you a thank you card!"

  13. Best film, musical or comedy - The Martianpublished at 03:44

So funny - they awarded it twice!

Even Sir Ridley didn't seem entirely sure, his film was a comedy - but the veteran director thanked his already honoured lead Matt Damon for bringing "his special brand of humour and grace".

"You have to stay hungry and keep bouncing the ball," he said.

"Hollywood Foreign Press where have you been? I thought this [award] was going to be posthumous."

Picking up her third Golden Globe, leading lady Jennifer Lawrence paid tribute to Joy director David O Russell, who has directed her in each of the three films she has won a Globe for.

    Quote Message

Every time I am up here, it's because of you. Thank you for choosing me. You are so untainted by all of this. You make movies like you don't care if no one ever sees them... I mean that as a compliment! I want us to be buried next to each other.

  16. Best performance by an actress in a television series, drama - Taraji P Henson, Empirepublished at 03:25

Taraji P Henson was overjoyed to win her Globe for playing ex-con Cookie in Empire: "Who knew that taking on an ex-convict would take me around the globe?"

Accepting his award from Morgan Freeman, director Inarritu joked with the veteran actor, who played the Almighty in Bruce Almighty: "I'm seeing God".

He went on to play tribute to his cast and crew, telling Leonardo DiCaprio "you're the guy".

    Quote Message

This has been the most difficult journey I have embarked upon. But we all, in this room, know pain is temporary but a film is forever. So who cares?

  18. Cecil B DeMille award - Denzel Washingtonpublished at 03:18

Tom Hanks presented this year's honorary award to Denzel Washington, citing "a body of work that is as noble, as eternal, as it is legendary".

Unfortunately the acceptance speech wasn't quite so remarkable.

The 61-year-old star took to the stage surrounded by all of his family, apart from his son Malcolm - who is writing a thesis.

First he admitted he had lost his speech, then - after some rambling thank yous - his wife quietly asked him if he needed his glasses. Which he did.  And when he asked her to read it instead, it turned out she didn't have hers either!

Hollywood screen idols aren't what they used to be...

  19. Slight awkwardness with Ricky and Mel Gibsonpublished at 02:59

Ricky Gervais and Mel GibsonImage source, AP

The last time Ricky Gervais hosted these awards, he made some disparaging remarks about Mel Gibson. Which made it all the more awkward having to introduce the actor again on Sunday.

"I’d rather spend the night in a hotel with Mel Gibson than Bill Cosby," he quipped, before the star came on stage.

Gibson was quick to respond: "I love seeing Ricky every three years because it reminds me to get a colonoscopy."

  20. Best TV series, drama - Mr Robotpublished at 02:57

Another win for the Amazon drama.

It's proving a good night for the streaming service, with two Globes in the bag for Mr Robot, beating major TV dramas, Game of Thrones and Empire.

The streaming service also won two Globes for Mozart in the Jungle - making it a significant player among the night's TV winners.
