Stormzy begins his performance of a medley of recent material sitting on a stool, singing soulfully, while backed by a band, orchestra and gospel choir.

He rises to his feet for the finale, a powerful rendition of I Got My Smile Back - a searingly honest account his struggles with mental health.

It's put a smile on our faces for sure.

  2. Award for tweet of the night goes to...published at 22:06 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2023

Lewis Capaldi seems to have found the funny side of being introduced by Brit Awards host Mo Gilligan as "Sam Capaldi".

He posted a doctored photo of him wearing fellow nominee Sam Smith's outfit from tonight - we think you both look great in it.

  3. Matty Healy keeps it shortpublished at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2023

Known for his outrageous statements, 1975 singer Matty Healy decided to tone it down tonight and kept it short and sweet.

"Thank you very much ladies and gentleman. This is one that has been voted for by the fans so that means a lot. And thank you to our team."

    Breaking

A fourth Brit award for another Cheshire act (like Harry Styles, as it's been mentioned more than once this week).

Their most recent album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language, gave them another chart-topper.

They beat Arctic Monkeys, Nova Twins, and perhaps surprisingly on current form, Wet Leg.

  5. Analysis

This week's wins cement Harry Styles' status as global superstarpublished at 21:56 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2023

    Colin Paterson
    Entertainment Correspondent, BBC News

Harry Styles had the biggest selling single of 2022 with As It Was and the biggest selling album of the year with Harry’s House.

If he had not been named Artist of The Year at the Brits it really would have been an injustice.

Tonight’s wins follow his Album of the Year triumph at the Grammys on Monday.

It feels that this week has really cemented his status as a global pop superstar.

Sometimes it is hard to remember that he started out his career being beaten into third place.

Yes, on the 2010 series of X Factor, One Direction finished behind Rebecca Ferguson and the winner Matt Cardle.

  6. Beyoncé says thanks againpublished at 21:55 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2023

"Thank you so much for loving Break My Soul. The only intention for this song was to dance," she says about Break My Soul, which just won international song of the year.

"Thank y'all for joining this dance for freedom and individuality."

  7. International song of the Year goes to... Beyoncépublished at 21:53 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2023

My hat is safe. Her second award of the night.

Break My Soul saw the US singer go in a Hacienda-style house music/dance direction.

If Beyoncé doesn't win this, with her house-style banger, I'll eat my hat. And it's a big woolly one as well, I'm that confident.

    • Beyoncé - Break My Soul
    • David Guetta & Bebe Rexha - I'm Good (Blue)
    • Fireboy DML & Ed Sheeran - Peru
    • Encanto cast - We Don't Talk About Bruno
    • Gayle - ABCDEFU
    • Jack Harlow - First Class
    • Lizzo - About Damn Time
    • Lost Frequencies & Calum Scott - Where Are You Now?
    • OneRepublic - I Ain't Worried
    • Taylor Swift - Anti-Hero

One of these is about to be crowed best British group of the year. The fact that the Arctic Monkeys aren't actually here, it seems, might turn out to be very relevant.

    • The 1975
    • Arctic Monkeys
    • Bad Boy Chiller Crew
    • Nova Twins

Four of Dublin's finest said thanks via a video link, with a nice background of Sydney harbour.

They sent guitarist Carlos O'Connell, who is not on tour with them after becoming a dad, to accept the award.

"Thanks for voting us best international group. We sent our best man Carlos, so hopefully he is behaving himself." The band say in the clip.

    And here comes Carlos!

"My manager called me about a week ago and she was all like 'make an effort' and I was like 'what's she trying to say to me, please don't tell me I'm winning'. But here we are.

"To the boys that are not here, you're my best friends in the world and I love you."

This next category is so varied it looks like a playlist from a birthday party, where most of the groups of people there have never met each other before.

    • Blackpink
    • Drake & 21 Savage
    • First Aid Kit
    • Fontaines DC

US pop star has just performed in a pink dress with a comedy-sized collar.

She ran through a medley of tracks from "the best album ever" - her one, Special from last year, that is.

It goes without saying that there was a flute solo (that flute is called Sasha by the way, and has its own Instagram account, external, FYI).

She was up for best international artist, which Beyonce won.

  14. Harry Styles is back on stage - and dedicates award to female artists not nominatedpublished at 21:31 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2023

    Imogen James
    BBC News Live reporter

    Back so soon, Styles!

    Again, he thanks the fans.

"I want to thank my family for being the most supportive, understanding, patient, loving family I could have ever asked for.

"I want to thank my mum for signing me up for X-Factor without telling me."

There's a big cheer for a One Direction reference as he says: "I want to thank Niall, Louis, Liam and Zayn because I wouldn't be here without you either."

Then he goes on to dedicate the award to the female artists not nominated in the category.

"I'm really really grateful for this and I'm very aware of my privilege up here tonight so this award is for Rina, Charlie, Florence, Mabel and Becky."

No shock there, his second Brit of the night.

His big single As It Was topped both the UK and US charts at the same time, so hard to argue.

  16. One Direction to Harry’s House. Styles wins Artist of the Yearpublished at 21:24 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2023

Let’s take a look back at his incredible career.

Despite not winning the 7th series of X-Factor, it’s probably fair to say One Direction are the most successful group to come out of the show. The 2010 season of the show was the first time the public got to know Harry Styles. One Direction have sold 70 million records and have been on an “indefinite hiatus” since 2016.

Style’s released his self-titled first album the year after his band went on a break, it went to the top of the charts around the world.

It wasn’t just a successful year musically for Styles, he was also in his first feature film, playing Alex in Dunkirk. The film would go on to be voted one of the 100 Best British Films ever by Time Out magazine.

And the music and movies have just kept coming from Styles. Third album Harry’s House went to number one in both the US and UK last year. He starred alongside Florence Pugh in Don’t Worry Darling and played fifteen nights at Madison Square Garden in New York.

  17. Artist of the Year nomineespublished at 21:23 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2023

This next one caused a stir as, in an era of genderless awards, it's an all-male lineup.

    • George Ezra
    • Harry Styles
    • Stormzy

Arctic Monkeys' record AM won album of the year in 2014

Here's a bit of context to that Wet Leg speech.

Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner provided the highlight of the 2014 Brit Awards, giving a poetic (if not slightly tipsy) acceptance speech about how the "cyclical nature of the universe" meant that rock n' roll "will never die".

The album of the year-winner then urged Brits officials to invoice him for the microphone as he dropped it to the floor and left the stage.

Addressing the speech, Turner later told Mojo magazine: “I maintain that I didn’t really have another way around it. Another way of justifying getting up in that room.

"What else was I supposed to do? To go up there and pretend that I’d been dreaming about that moment since I was a kid would have been dishonest.”

The band pack onto the stage and mock the Artic Monkeys speech from the 2014 Awards

"That rock and roll, hey," they start with.

"In all seriousness, thank you so much. It's really cool to be doing this on an indie label.

"Being on the telly can feel like such a boys club thing but I just want to thank all of the women that worked on the production."
