How are the awards voted for?published at 17:36 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2023
17:36 GMT 11 February 2023Paul Glynn
Entertainment reporterThe winners of the main awards are chosen by the Brits Voting Academy, a panel of around 1,200 music experts - including publishers, managers, journalists and previous winners - who also selected the nominees last month.
The exceptions to this are the genre categories - alternative/rock act, dance act, hip hop/grime/rap Act and pop/R&B act - which are voted for by TikTok users.
Brits chairman Damian Christian recently told Music Week the Voting Academy "gets reviewed and updated every year.
"We've worked hard over the last few years to modernise it and six years ago set ourselves the target of making it a 50/50 split of male and females and to ensure at least a quarter of voters were black, Asian, minority ethnic," he said. "So I think we can look at the percentages this year and be happy with the balance."
This year, three already announced winners, including David Guetta and Kid Harpoon, will be given their three-headed Brit Award trophies on the red carpet before the show. Meaning the rising star award, won by girl group Flo, appears to have been downgraded to make more room for the big names in the televised show.
