As Fraser has said himself during the campaign trail, he’s been on quite the “journey”. Having picked up best actor wins at the SAG awards and the Critics Choice Awards, it always felt like it would come down to a battle between him and Elvis star Austin Butler.

The Whale marked Fraser’s first lead role for 12 years. He plays a reclusive and morbidly obese English professor who wants to reconnect with his estranged daughter.

Fraser's on-screen transformation was the result of heavy prosthetics, which he admitted was "a challenge", physically and emotionally. And Oscar voters always like a transformation – think Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club, Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour or Charlize Theron in Monster.

This win also makes him the first best actor winner without a picture nod since Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart (2009).

  7. The Daniels dedicate their win to their Mumspublished at 03:19 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2023

The Daniels - Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert - have triumphed with best director, for Everything Everywhere All At Once. They beat some tough competition, including Martin McDonagh, Todd Field and Steven Spielberg.

"We want to dedicate this to all the mommies in the world, specifically ours," they said, a sentiment we can wholeheartedly endorse.

This is the fifth time two credited directors have been nominated for the same film, including Joel and Ethan Cohen, who were nominated for No Country for Old Men and True Grit.

Host Jimmy Kimmel did a quick Q&A with some select audience members a bit ago.

First, he asks Nobel peace laureate Malala Yousafzai if she wants to weigh in on one of the most controversial questions in Hollywood - whether Harry Styles really did spit on Chris Pine at the Venice Film Festival?

"I only talk about peace," she replies.

Kimmel moves on to Colin Farrell and then Jessica Chastain, while a large bear (or at least someone in a rather convincing bear costume) struts around behind him.

Some might argue editors could be a little more brutal with films these days, with the likes of the Avatar sequel coming in at over three hours.

But seriously, congratulations to Paul Rogers who has won his first Oscar (for only his second film, not bad going!).

He must have spent a LOT of time jumping between all those multiverses in the cutting room.

    And there we have it.

All Quiet On The Western Front loses its “semi final”.

Best adapted screenplay has gone to Sarah Polley for Women Talking.

I am gutted for the Scottish triathlete Lesley Paterson, who was nominated for All Quiet on the Western Front and spent 16 years of her life getting the film made.

Everything Everywhere All at Once wins its semi-final, taking the award for original screenplay.

After a very exciting forty minutes EEAAO is back as the best picture favourite.

Chandrabose and MMM Keeravaani won best song for Naatu Naatu, and riffed on The Carpenters' hit song Top of the World - they sang a version with lyrics about their film RRR and India.

It's the first Indian feature film to be nominated for anything other than best international film at the Academy Awards.

RRR stands for Rise, Roar, Revolt – it missed out on any film nominations, but is a historical fantasy that tells the story of two revolutionaries who fight against British rule in India.

There were whoops and cheers - some surprised ones perhaps - at the Sound win for the box office blockbusting sequel starring Tom Cruise.

But while it wasn't a shoo-in, this wasn't a huge surprise either, with the film picking up several other sound awards in the run-up to the big one tonight.

"I want to thank the Academy by not being offended by the words women and talking being so close together," says Sarah Polley moments ago.

Her film is about "how people who don't agree on a single issue manage to carve out a way forward free of violence by talking and by listening".

It's based on Miriam Toews' novel of the same name published in 2018. It's based on the real-life women of a Mennonite community being drugged and raped by the men they lived alongside, between 2005 and 2009.

Some of those women managed to break free, and this film is a testament to their strength and resilience.

Jimmy Kimmel joked tonight that writers were "lonely nerds" often hunched over their computers.

Well, these "nerds" had the last laugh, with Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheniert picking up best original screenplay a few minutes ago.

Scheniert thanked many of his teachers for teaching him to be "less of a butthead".

While Kwan said in his speech that his "imposter syndrome was at an all-time high".

We don't think he needs to worry about that.
