"You can be your own hero even if you feel broken inside," said Lady Gaga, as she took to the stage to sing.

She'd initially said she wasn't going to perform as she was currently filming Joker: Folie à Deux, so this is a bonus!

The singer, actress and all-round superstar is up for her fourth Oscar nomination, for best song - Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick.

Who can remember the last time she sang at the Oscars, in her passionate performance of Shallow from the film A Star is Born, with Bradley Cooper, in 2019?

They were so convincing that she had to shoot down rumours of a romance afterwards, telling Jimmy Kimmel’s chat show: "I'm an artist, I guess we did a good job - fooled ya!"

She's giving a typically assured performance tonight.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, adapted from Charlie Mackesy's best-selling book, aired on BBC One over Christmas and was watched by 8.7 million viewers.

The story of kindness, friendship, courage and hope definitely tugged at the heartstrings.

The hand-drawn traditionally animated British film featured voices including Tom Hollander as The Mole and Idris Elba as The Fox.

Given it's also up for best picture - and won the big prize at the Baftas last month - this was expected and it's the second win of the night for the German-language film All Quiet on the Western Front so far.

Bit of trivia for you - the 1930 adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 anti-war novel also won best picture and best director nearly 100 years ago!

Director Edward Berger told the film's star Felix Kammerer in his speech: "Without you, none of us would be here." Despite being on-screen for the vast majority of the film and the movie landing nine nominations, Kammerer didn't get a nod.

Shot in the Nilgiri mountains in southern India, this is the story of an indigenous couple called Bomman and Bellie, as they care for Raghu, an orphaned baby elephant.

We see them work endlessly to help him survive, in the wild beauty that surrounds them.

You can listen here to a BBC World Service radio programme about this film.

  13. Oscars ticking along nicelypublished at 01:41 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2023

    Tom Brook
    Reporting from Los Angeles

Jamie Lee Curtis winning for best supporting actress for Everything Everywhere All at Once is a real bellwether. It suggests that her film could be the night’s big winner.

She’d been up against favourite Angela Bassett for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Both Jamie Lee Curtis and Angela Bassett gave great performances.

Also a good omen for the German-language film All Quiet on the Western Front is its win for cinematography indicating it may end up with multiple trophies - but not as many as the seven it picked up at the Baftas last month.

Overall, the Oscars are ticking along nicely with Jimmy Kimmel doing well as master of ceremonies; it seems the Academy Awards is hewing to a traditional format - but will it bring in the viewers? That’s the big question.

We've been jumping around a bit - but back now to Ruth Carter's win for achievement in costume design.

This is Carter's second Oscar, having already won for the first Black Panther film in 2018.

How moving that she dedicated it to her mother, who recently died aged 101, asking the film's late star Chadwick Boseman to "look after" her. I have to admit it brought a tear to my eye.

The costumes for this film were stunning. But Carter's mother was the real superhero of her speech here.

This lively number from the film RRR won best original song at the Golden Globes, where it beat heavyweights like Taylor Swift and Rihanna.

It's the first Indian feature film to be nominated for anything other than best international film at the Academy Awards.

Written and directed by SS Rajamouli, RRR stands for Rise, Roar, Revolt – it missed out on any film nominations, but is a historical fantasy that tells the story of two revolutionaries who fight against British rule in India.

Unusual fact for you: the video for the hit song was filmed in front of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky's official residence in 2021.

She was not nominated for an Oscar, unfortunately.
