    You may well ask.

In case you haven't seen Everything Everywhere All at Once, David Byrne's creepy hot dog fingers are a key element from the film.

One of the multiverses which the characters inhabit has people with long, wavy and rather useless fingers, so he was replicating this during his performance just now.

    So now you know.

This is a very well-deserved Oscar for James Friend in the category of cinematography. This film is a visceral portrayal of the horrors of World War One, showing the bleak landscapes of the war from the perspective of young, naive German soldiers.

However, this win is yet another loss for a female cinematographer - Mandy Walker was nominated for Elvis, only the third female nominee in this category in Oscars history.

This Oscar-nominated song, from Everything Everywhere All at Once, sees Talking Heads frontman David Byrne return to the Oscars.

He previously won in 1998 for best original score for The Last Emperor in 1988. He shared his golden statuette with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cong Su.

This is a Life was co-written with Son Lux and Mitski.

At the ceremony, Byrne is sharing the stage with Son Lux and the film’s star Stephanie Hsu, who was up for best supporting actress.

This black comedy about two brothers grieving the death of their mother set in Northern Ireland, starring actor James Martin as farmer Lorcan, repeats its Bafta success.

The film also examines Martin's character fight for independence - like Lorcan, Martin also has Down's syndrome.

It's more than worthy of this win tonight, and will have you laughing one minute and crying the next.

In a recent interview, Martin told me he was saving his leopard-print jacket for the ceremony - which also falls on his birthday. And he didn't disappoint!

This win sends out a strong global political message.

He remains in solitary confinement, but he continues to oppose Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

His wife, who was there on his behalf, told him to "stay strong, my love".

  15. Will history be made tonight?published at 00:48 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2023

    Sophie Long
    Reporting from Los Angeles

There are several ways in which it might be. If Michelle Yeoh manages to see off double Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett and take home the Oscar for Best Actress she would be the first Asian woman to win in that category.

She would also be only the second non-white woman to be crowned Best Actress in the awards 95 year history.

If Mandy Walker wins Best Cinematographer for her work on Elvis she would be the first woman ever to take home that Oscar, she’s only the third woman ever to be nominated for cinematography.

But the Academy had the opportunity to break the glass ceiling that’s been firmly in place over that category last year with Ari Wegner for The Power of the Dog, and they didn’t take it.

Mandy Walker has solid competition from Brit James Friend for All Quiet on the Western Front, Darius Khondji for Bardo, Florian Hoffmeister for Tar and Roger Deakins for Empire of Light.

This was considered a three-horse race between Kerry Condon (Banshees of Inisherin), Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Jamie Lee Curtis.

This was Curtis's first Oscar nomination at the age of 64, and she's now taking home the coveted prize for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Curtis plays hard-nosed inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdra in the absurdist comedy drama set across various multiverses.

Could this be the first of many wins tonight for the popular madcap film?

Prolific songwriter Diane Warren has received a whopping 14 Oscar nominations since 1988, and won an honorary Oscar last year, presented by Cher.

In 2015, Warren shared a nomination with current nominee Lady Gaga, for the song Til It Happens to You, for the film The Hunting Ground.

And back in 1999, Warren was nominated for I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, from the disaster film Armageddon.

She’s performing alongside US singer and actress Sofia Carson, who’s started out playing Evie, the daughter of the Evil Queen in Disney’s TV movie Descendants. She later returned to the role in Descendants 2 and Descendants 3.
