    More than 400 schools are closed today across Scotland as forecasters predict it could be hit by up to 40cm (16 inches) of snow.

    Transport minister Humza Yousaf said the amber warnings in force for many areas could be upgraded to red - meaning people should take immediate action to keep themselves safe from the impact of the weather.

    Mr Yousaf advised anyone in parts of Scotland covered by the amber alert to avoid travel on Wednesday.

    Live London Underground updates are available on the Tfl website, external. Here is the picture at the moment:

    • On the Central Line there is no service between Woodford and Epping due to a faulty train
    • The District Line has no service between Earl's Court and Ealing Broadway/Richmond causing severe delays
    • The Overground has no service between Edmonton Green and Cheshunt due to overhead line problems. There are minor delays on other parts of the line
    • There are severe delays on the Piccadilly Line due to signal failures at King's Cross, Arnos Grove and Hammersmith
    • Tfl Rail is experiencing severe delays due to the poor weather conditions
    • All other lines are running a good service

    South Farnborough, Hampshire, was the coldest place in the UK yesterday with the mercury dipping to as low as -11.7C.

    Elsewhere in the country there were several areas that recorded temperatures of less than -10C. Cairnwell in Scotland was a teeth-chattering -11.5C, Ravensworth in North Yorkshire was -11.4C and it was -10.9C in Frittenden, Kent.

    National Rail has warned that the wintry weather may disrupt services across the UK today.

    Train companies affected include c2c, Greater Anglia, London Overground, ScotRail, South Western Railway, Southeastern, Stansted Express and TfL Rail.

    Good morning. Today we will be bringing you live coverage of snow disruption after a second day of cold weather affects swathes of the UK.

    • Amber warnings are in place across parts of Scotland, northern England, the East Midlands, the east and south-east of England and London
    • Up to 40cm (15in) of snow could fall in northern England and Scotland, between Wednesday morning and 18:00 GMT on Thursday, the Met Office warned

    Scotland will be the focus of much of tomorrow’s snow – particularly in the east and across the central belt.

    Blizzards and drifting could occur, blown in by the strong easterly winds.

    A yellow weather warning covers much of the country and amber warnings are in place in the east.

    The further west you are the drier it will be but temperatures are unlikely to go higher than 1C.

    Tomorrow the heaviest snow showers in England will be in the north-east of England where there could be up to 15cm of snow.

    Across the south of the country there will be a scattering of snow showers but the afternoon could see some sunny spells.

    Maximum temperatures in England will be 2C in the south-west, however the wind will make it feel closer to -9 or -10.

    Northern Ireland will experience scattered snow showers – most frequently in the east.

    Scottish Borders Council has decided to shut all its schools on Wednesday ahead of forecast snowfalls.

    The local authority said they were "likely" to remain closed on Thursday due to the conditions anticipated.
