A student has attempted to catch the eye of Donald Trump by mowing environmental messages into grass under the flight path of Air Force One.

Ollie Nancarrow, 18, cut an image of a giant penis, a polar bear and a climate change message on his family's land close to Stansted Airport, Essex.

The US president arrived at the airport on Monday morning for a three-day state visit to the UK.

The teenager wrote "Climate change is real", as well as "Oi Trump".

He took two hours out from A-level revision to carry out his protest, using a ride-on mower to cut the images into fields at Hatfield Heath, Essex.

  2. Former communications director disagrees with Trump's criticism of Khanpublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 3 June 2019

    The World at One
    BBC Radio 4

Anthony Scaramucci, Mr Trump's former communications director, says he disagrees with Mr Trump's tweet criticising London mayor Sadiq Khan.

"There’s no need to punch down like that," he tells BBC Radio 4's World at One.

The US president earlier tweeted that Mr Khan had done a "terrible job" as mayor of London.

However, Mr Scaramucci also defended Mr Trump, saying "his rhetoric is inconsistent with his reliability".

"He’s actually very reliable," he says. "But then when he does stuff like this he scares the living daylight out of people."

“If Mayor Khan met the president this afternoon and shook his hand, my guess is that whatever the issues they have between them would be over," he adds.

While Prime Minister Theresa May and President Donald Trump are in talks on Tuesday, their other halves - Philip May and Melania Trump - will be attending a traditional English garden party.

The event will take place at Downing Street and will be attended by staff from Downing Street and the US embassy. Children of staff have also been invited.

The pair met on Mr Trump's UK visit last year and took part in a number of engagements together.

During one event, Mrs Trump stunned onlookers as she donned 10cm Louboutin heels to play lawn bowls.

The contrast could not have been starker.

The president of the United States was given a warm welcome by the Queen and the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace, with a 41-gun salute to mark his arrival and an honour guard of young Grenadiers resplendent in scarlet.

But just a little earlier, Mr Trump had launched a verbal attack on the mayor of the city in which he is now a guest, calling Sadiq Khan "a stone cold loser" for questioning why the president had been granted a state visit.

In truth, this is all of a piece for Mr Trump: he gets the pictures and the pageantry that he wants and will look good in his re-election campaign next year, and he gets to pick a fight with a liberal, Muslim politician that will play well with his base.

Already this row is forcing those campaigning to be Britain's prime minister to define themselves against Mr Trump.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt criticised Mr Khan for his "great discourtesy".

But Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the office of the mayor of London should be respected in the same way one respects the office of the president.

This visit has only just begun and already the Great Disruptor is tweeting angry thoughts and breaching diplomatic niceties.

Business as usual, you might think, only today he also happens to be a guest of the Queen - who rarely tweets and is always diplomatic.

  6. 'He gets the special relationship'published at 13:33 British Summer Time 3 June 2019

    The World at One
    BBC Radio 4

One of Donald Trump's former communications directors, Anthony Scaramucci, says Trump has been looking forward to visiting the UK.

Mr Scaramucci - who remains friends with the US president despite lasting just 11 days in his role - tells BBC Radio 4's World At One that Mr Trump "really enjoyed" his trip to the UK last year and "got on well" with the Queen.

“His mum’s from Scotland, he loves Great Britain and he gets the special relationship," Mr Scaramucci says.

However, he adds that Mr Trump is not only interested in the pageantry of the visit and it could also help the UK secure a trade deal with the US after Brexit.

  7. Labour MP says there are 'better uses of our overstretched police'published at 13:29 British Summer Time 3 June 2019

MP Rupa Huq says in a tweet that Londoners' lives have been disrupted due to the president's visit.

Speaking from Buckingham Palace, BBC North America editor Jon Sopel drew attention to the benefits Mr Trump will see in meeting the royals today.

He said: "It's 08:00 in the morning on the east coast of America, 07:00 central and 05:00 on the west coast. It's breakfast time - people will be watching this. All the American networks are carrying these pictures, they've all sent their news anchors over here to be part of this moment."

He added: "The Royal Family cuts through the United States in a way that UK politics doesn't, and Donald Trump knows this is good for business."

    Protester Auriel Granville

Auriel Granville - a climate activist from Wimbledon in south London - came to protest the president’s visit dressed as the Statue of Liberty.

“I don’t think he should be received in this way - climate change should be top of our agenda and Donald Trump is a climate change denier.

“He’s not listening to scientists, who are all saying it is a result of human activity.

“We have a wonderful oasis of life on earth and we need to preserve it."

  15. Trump's spat with Khan a matter for them - No 10published at 12:51 British Summer Time 3 June 2019

Downing Street says the US president's spat with London Mayor Sadiq Khan was a matter for them.

The prime minister's spokesman would also not be drawn on Theresa May's response to Donald Trump's pre-visit interviews criticising her Brexit policy and backing former foreign secretary and Tory leadership candidate Boris Johnson.

The US president also praised Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage in interviews over the weekend, calling for him to be involved in the UK's negotiations with the EU.

Asked whether Mr Farage should join the negotiations with Brussels, the spokesman said: "The next phase of Brexit negotiations will be conducted by somebody else, not by the prime minister.

"It will be for them to seek a way forward."

US President Donald Trump and Theresa May will not have formal one-to-one talks during his visit, Downing Street have confirmed.

The two leaders will be joined by their delegations of senior officials and ministers for a bilateral meeting.

The prime minister's official spokesman insisted this was "nothing unusual" and said it was "always going to be the case" that the meeting at Number 10 would involve the delegations.

"These are always how the discussions take place with any leader," the spokesman added.

He said the two leaders would also have time for informal private talks during Mr Trump's visit.

"You can see the fact she is providing him with a tour of the Churchill War Rooms, I would expect them to be having discussions with just the two of them," the spokesman said.
