    Residents of Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria, have paused cleaning up from Storm Ciara to put up protection for Storm Dennis.

    Colin Smith from the Appleby Emergency Response Team said: “We’re trying to get the town prepared for possibly a flood.

    “Hopefully it won’t happen but we’re taking every precaution we can, putting sandbags in places that might flood.

    “Putting in a few more than last week as we got caught out by the height of the water - it was higher than we thought it might be.”

    The increasing stormy conditions in the Solent mean both the vehicle and Red Jet high speed ferry services between Southampton and Cowes have had to be stopped, external.

    Ferry firm Red Funnel said passengers would be updated on both services at about 20:00 GMT.
