  1. Teaching assistant died 'from side effects from the pill'published at 16:23

    A teaching assistant died from a blood clot in the lungs caused by side effects from the contraceptive pill which were not effectively treated, an inquest has concluded.

    Fallan Kurek, 21, died in hospital in May last year after being found collapsed at her home in Tamworth.

    Her father Brian, speaking to the media shortly after his daughter's death, said she had been looking forward to the rest of her life and described her as "confident, cheeky and bubbly".

  8. Thelwell's pony cartoons on show in Hampshirepublished at 14:10

    Images of plump ponies by cartoonist Norman Thelwell are featuring in an exhibition of his artwork in Hampshire.

    The artist, who died in 2004, drew Penelope and her mischievous pony Kipper in hundreds of humorous scenarios, including the destruction of country fairs.

    The exhibition at Mottisfont features more than 70 original artworks.

    Work is getting under way to build a temporary bypass around a major flood-hit Lake District road.

    A section of the A591 was closed between Dunmail Raise, north of Grasmere, and Thirlmere.

    Some bus services will be able to use the bypass as well as cyclists and pedestrians but it won't be open to cars.

  11. Stephen Fry steps down from Norwich City boardpublished at 13:43

    Actor, writer and television presenter Stephen Fry has stepped down from the board of Norwich City Football Club.

    The entertainer, who has a home in Norfolk and is a lifelong fan of the club, will continue to support the club as a Norwich City ambassador.

    He became a director of the club, whose joint majority shareholder is TV cook and writer Delia Smith, in 2010.

    He will be replaced as a director by her nephew, ex-civil servant Thomas Smith.

  12. Man in court accused of murdering his mother and sisterpublished at 13:36

    A man accused of murdering his mother and sister has made his first appearance at Liverpool Crown Court.

    The body of Bernadette Fox, 57, of Brookhill Road, Bootle, Merseyside, was found on 17 April 2015, the day after her daughter Sarah Fox, 27, was found dead at a nearby property.

    Peter Fox, 26, was previously detained under the Mental Health Act.

    He was further remanded to appear at the same court for a plea hearing on 4 April.

  14. Bristol mosque bacon sandwich attack: Man chargedpublished at 13:04

    A man has been charged by police in connection with an alleged hate crime in which bacon sandwiches were thrown at a mosque in Bristol.

    Officers are investigating an incident at Jamia Mosque, Totterdown, on Sunday when bacon was allegedly thrown at the door and abuse shouted at worshippers.

    A scuba diver facing extradition to Malta's spoken of his elation after charges against him over the deaths of his girlfriend and friend were dropped.

    Stephen Martin, 56, from Rustington, West Sussex was due to face trial on charges of involuntary homicide.

    Larissa Hooley, 48, from Aylesbury, and Nigel Haines, 59, of Hove, died during the incident off the island of Gozo in 2012.

  16. Essex man names baby after Margaret Thatcherpublished at 12:41

    A Conservative councillor has named his baby son after the former Prime Minster Margaret Thatcher because he "wanted a name that stood out".

    Rob Gledhill, of Thurrock council, and his partner Abbie Maguire called the baby Thatcher Stephen Maguire, Your Thurrock, external first reported.

    Mr Gledhill said: "We're happy with it and if he's not happy with it when he's older I'm sure he'll change it."

    Asked if it was a political statement, he said: "No, not at all."
