    The students I spoke to at New College in Wellington this morning seemed pleased with their A-level results.

    And there was relief too, after all the waiting, with Thomas Billington telling me "I feel like I've just come out of a limbo state".

    He and Amber Mansell have both won places at Southampton University and she said: "I was just shaking the whole morning, I didn't know what to do."

    The vice-principal responsible for the curriculum, Jean Wright, said that she'd noticed more students getting unconditional offers from universities this year, possibly because they were keen to fill spaces.

    But she also said there'd been a lot of interest from students in apprenticeships.

    Dover College celebrated some of the best results on the Kent coast with 44% of all A Level/BTEC results at a four-year high of an A* or A grade. 

    Over half of all grades were above a B, equating to an average UCAS candidate points per entry total of 93 and UCAS points per candidates total of 347 which is higher than local selective grammar schools on previous year’s results.

    Young people starting university or college this autumn are being urged to get a vaccine against meningitis.

    Public Health England says the jab will help protect against meningitis W in particular  - a sometimes deadly strain that is on the rise.

    A teenage clog dancer has hot-stepped her way to a place at the University of Sheffield after combining performing with study.

    Robyn Wallace, 17, from Littleborough, has managed to not only set up her own 50-strong clog dancing club, but she also won at the European Brass Band Championships where she played percussion. 

    She is now off to study Physics after securing an A in Maths, and Bs in Chemistry and Physics.

    Students at Richard Huish College in Taunton have been celebrating their A-Level results. Their 2016 class achieved an A* to C pass rate of 80%, with an overall pass rate of 99%.

    A number of students were also celebrating good BTEC results, equivalent to three A-Levels. Some of their students heading off to universities in Gloucester and London while others have opted for a gap year volunteering abroad.

  12. Young rugby star overcomes injury to score A-level successpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    Rugby-mad County Durham student Sam Adamson battled through the pain to score top grades in his A-levels despite being unaware he had broken his wrist. 

    The 18-year-old, pictured on the right, struggled through lengthy written papers after picking up an injury in a tournament.

    Barnard Castle School's outgoing head boy, and vice captain of the first XV, will require surgery to fix the break in his scaphoid bone. 

    Nevertheless, the teenager, from Hunwick, was still able to score A*s in chemistry, maths, further maths and a rare Distinction Level 1 in physics. 

    His brother Jamie, 16, who plays for the England and Newcastle Falcons academies, sat his GCSEs despite suffering stress fractures to his spine. 

    He will pick up his results next week and plans to stay on at the school to take his A-levels.

    Ben Bird found out early this morning he had got his university place before he picked up his results from New College Nottingham.

    The 19-year-old said he felt a lot of pressure and was surprised at how well he'd done.

    He got an A in politics, B in film studies, B in English and B in media studies and is off to the University of Leeds to start a course in Middle Eastern studies.

    A-level results have been released across Lancashire with one Nelson-based student hoping her success will fulfil her "dream of making a difference in the lives of those who need it the most".

    Anisha Javed secured top grades in Biology, Psychology and Sociology.

    She won a place to study nursing at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston.

    The 18-year-old also completed her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award during her time at Nelson and Colne College.

    The A-level pass rate in the North East was the highest in the UK at 98.5%.

    But the proportion of students getting A* and As is the lowest in UK at 22.1%. However, that's a slight rise on last year's result of 21.9%.
