The growing number of apprenticeships on offer at the BAE shipyard in Barrow in Cumbria is attracting some students who might otherwise have gone to university, according to the principal of Barrow Sixth Form College.
As students arrived at the college, David Batten said: "The university experience is still very attractive to students, and so that's something that students are still going for, but we have noticed an increasing number going for higher apprenticeships because of the local economy."
Earlier this year the government confirmed Britain would continue to have a nuclear deterrent carried in Barrow-built submarines, guaranteeing work at the shipyard in the 2030s.
