  2. Student to become first family member to head to universitypublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    Louise O'Brien will be the first member of her family to attend university when she enrols on to an Egyptology and Classical Studies course at the University of Liverpool next month. 

    The 18-year-old from Wigan scored A-levels in Medieval History, English Literature and Chemistry.

  3. Record results for handful of Shropshire collegespublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    Despite a slight drop in A-level top grades nationally, several schools and colleges in Shropshire have been celebrating record results.

    Concord College had just over 95% of students achieving A-star, A or B grades. 

    Adams Grammar in Newport had 80% passing with an A-star, A or B grade. Its head Gary Hickey said it was a "privilege to witness pupils you've worked with since the age of 11 - see all their hard work come to fruition".

    About 1,000 students at New College in Wellington (featured below) have been opening their results this morning. The college said about 20 courses had achieved a 100% pass rate.

    There's big smiles all round at the National Church of England Academy in Hucknall, Nottingham - they've received their best ever set of results.

    Kelly Wall, head of sixth form, said, “It has been a fabulous year and it’s great to see the students receive the results that their hard work deserves.

    "They’re overjoyed they’re now set to make the next move to good universities or great employment opportunities."

    Students at Newcastle College, external in Staffordshire have been among thousands getting their A-level results today.

    Professor Steve West, the vice chancellor at the University of the West of England, found his A-Levels were not what he expected. He later found out he has dyslexia.

    There's something to celebrate at Nottingham Girls' High School.

    It's once again received a 100% pass rate with 94% of pupils achieving a grade C and above.

    This morning I met Matilda, who describes herself as a "struggling actress". 

    She was brave enough to open her A-level results live on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire this morning. 

    She's decided to take a gap year after studying at Ormiston Bushfield Academy, external in Peterborough. 

    Her results are as follows: 

    • Performing Arts - A*
    • English - C
    • Psychology - C
    Students getting their A-level results

    Matilda (pictured in the middle) wants to be a West End star and is going to apply for a musical theatre course next year. She says in five or six years' time "you'll see me in Funny Girl - I'll be the next Sheridan Smith".

    I've been out and about this morning in Peterborough talking to students who've been getting their A-level results

    Head of sixth form Haseena Manji, at Orminston Bushfield Academy, told me the school's 99% pass rate is down to lots of things, but the work ethic of their students is "brilliant".

    It's a big day for North Yorkshire's A-Level students as today's the day they hear their results and find out how it affects their career choices.

    Earlier, I spoke to former Harrogate Grammar School pupil Jasmine Cannon who got three grade A's, meaning she's heading off to Newcastle University to study medicine.

    Meanwhile, fellow pupil Zsofia Hesketh has plans to go to Cambridge University - and she let me know live on BBC Radio York how she'd done:

    A teenage traveller has become the first in her family to go university.

    Stephanie Bagnall got A* in English literature, B in drama and C in business studies in her A-levels and will now go to Royal Holloway, University of London, to read English.

    The 18-year-old, from Gloucester, comes from a family who for generations have worked as show people, travelling the country working at fairs.

    But her mum set up a cafe in order to allow her daughter to take her A-Levels.

    She scored A* in photography, A in English and a B in biology - but 18-year-old Catie Munnings, from Headcorn in Kent, won't be going to university. Instead she's going to be a rally driver.

    Some of the mothers of students at Rochdale College say they're hugely proud of their children's' results which means a chance of a university education they didn't have themselves.

    Brad Tweedale's mum said she was "absolutely over the moon" as he is the first member of the family to go to university - as he takes the next step in his dream to become a doctor.

    The number of students being accepted for university places has reached a record level with the Ucas admissions services saying 424,000 places have been offered, an increase of 3% on this day last year.

    A student from Nelson and Colne College who battled mental health for several years says she never imagined she would land a place at university, let alone one of the most prestigious in the country.

    Lotte Gleeson achieved three A* grades and an A in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics, and her "dream" offer to study Physics at the University of Oxford.

    The 18-year-old now hopes her story will inspire others to believe in themselves.
