    Council staff are continuing to check on the damage caused by last Friday's tidal surge in Scarborough.

    They're looking at sea defences, slipways, walls and railings. Some temporary repairs have been carried out already.  

    About a dozen properties along the North Yorkshire coast are thought to have been flooded. 

    The government is likely to be asked to help to cover the cost of repairs - though it's not yet known what the final bill will be.

    Her body was found by people walking on a pathway off Lordens Hills yesterday morning.

    She's been named locally as 16-year-old Leonne Weeks.

    Police are questioning an 18-year-old man, external who was arrested last night on suspicion of murder.

  3. Huddersfield man arrested over theft of valuable guitars in Scarboroughpublished at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2017

    A man's been arrested on suspicion of stealing five guitars worth in total about £20,000, external from a shop in Scarborough in the early hours of yesterday morning.

    Police were called to a suspected burglary at a shop on Bar Street at about 03:40 on Monday.

    A witness reported seeing a man riding a bicycle away with a "massive holdall" on his back.

    After pursuing the suspect, the man's holdall was found to contain the valuable collector's items, which are each worth between £3,000 and £4,000.

    The 57-year-old man, from Huddersfield, was arrested on suspicion of burglary and remains in police custody.

    Efforts are going on this morning to find the cause of a large hole which has appeared in the Decathlon car park near Moorfoot in central Sheffield.  

    As efforts to determine the cause of the collapse go on, the effect on the Decathlon store isn't clear. 

    We're trying to get comment from the company.

    People in rural parts of Yorkshire are missing out due to a lack of reliable services, according to a new report

    Rural England says getting decent healthcare and transport are the main things which prove difficult in out-of-town locations. 

    The organisation claims budget cuts are partly to blame.

    Things aren't looking too good for drivers on the motorways in West Yorkshire at the moment. Here are the latest details we have:

    • There's very slow traffic on the M1 northbound between J41, A650 (Carrgate) and J42, M62 (Lofthouse), because of an accident earlier on. Congestion to J39, A636 (Wakefield)
    • There's also very slow traffic on the M62 eastbound between J25, A644 (Brighouse) and J26, M606 (Chain Bar), because of an earlier broken down vehicle.

    It was once known as the Knightsbridge of the North because of its shops, but now Leeds is making a name for itself as a destination for food and drink as well. 

    New BBC research shows the number of restaurants in the city centre has gone up by a quarter in the last five years. There's also been an 11% increase in bars. 

    It comes as figures show that traditional entertainment venues such as pubs, bingo halls and comedy clubs are in decline across the UK.

    Officers investigating the suspicious death of a teenager in Rotherham are appealing for help from the public.

    It's going to be a big day in Elland today, with the Grade II-listed bridge there finally due to reopen after being badly damaged by flooding in December 2015.

    Floodwater washed out the foundations of the 1811 bridge and caused severe structural damage and a crack in the road surface:

    The A64 in Bilbrough is currently blocked and there's slow traffic westbound near Bilbrough Top because of an accident. 

    Congestion is as far as Copmanthorpe.

    Some of the archaeological treasures of prehistoric Britain, including one in North Yorkshire, are featured in a new set of eight stamps.

    Issued by the Royal Mail, the stamps include an illustration of a headdress dug up at the Mesolithic site of Star Carr (pictured top right).

    The deer skull headdress is thought to have been used during rituals.

    The stamps present a timeline from an ancient ritual of 11,000 years ago, to the Iron Age of about 300 BC.

    A further update on the news that a man's being questioned over the death of a teenage girl in Dinnington, South Yorkshire.

    Her body was found yesterday morning by people out walking on a pathway off Lordens Hill.

    The girl has been named locally as 16-year-old Leonne Weeks.

    The man is 18-years-old and was arrested last night.

    The man is 18 and was arrested last night, police say.
