    The family and friends of long jumper Greg Rutherford shared in the stress at the weekend, despite being 6,000 miles away from Rio.

    At one in the morning, dozens of them gathered in the athlete's back garden to watch him as he fought back from a no medal position to take bronze with his final jump. 

    The group at Woburn Sands all agreed their night had been highly stressful, even if earlier Greg seemed so relaxed.

    The Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain says racial abuse is part of her life - and has been "for years".

    The 31-year-old, who was brought up in Luton and now lives in Milton Keynes, says she has received abuse after "massive things happen" in the news, which started following 9/11.

    "I've had things thrown at me and [been] pushed and shoved," she told BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs.

    "I feel like that's just become a part of my life now. I expect it. Absolutely I expect it."

    "I expect to be shoved or pushed or verbally abused because that happens. It's been happening for years."

    Asked by host Kirsty Young how she reacted, she said she did not retaliate.

  3. Criticism of Berlin Wall plans at nightclubpublished at 15:43 British Summer Time 15 August 2016

    A councillor has described a St Albans' nightclub's plans to put four pieces of the Berlin Wall in its barbecue area as "extraordinary".

    As reported in the Herts Advertiser, external, the owners of the club at Batchwood Hall are seeking approval from St Albans District Council to erect the pieces which are each 10ft high. 

    Labour councillor for Batchwood, Roma Mills, believes it's inappropriate: "I couldn't believe it when I first heard about it to be honest," she said.

    "Forgetting it's Batchwood Hall, which is a 19th Century manor house, why would you locate large pieces of the Berlin Wall, which itself has historic value and interest, in the barbecue area of a nightclub just outside St Albans?"

    In a statement, the owners of Batchwood Hall, Deltic Group, said it's "considering using original parts of the Berlin Wall as works of living art, and an historical record of major interest".  

    The application will be put forward in a planning meeting on 19 September.

    Tatsiana Sharakova was so far clear that she was always going to win, she might have been a lap ahead, but Cheshunt's Trott was the best of the rest with a great burst.

    We've heard Hertfordshire's Jodie Williams (pictured second from right) has qualified as a fastest loser and joins team-mate Dina Asher-Smith in securing a place in Wednesday's semi-finals in the women's 200m. 

    But Jamaican sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown, who won 200m gold at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, is out.

    She ran in the wrong lane as she came off the bend in her heat, and didn't run a fast enough time to progress either.

    "I seem to be having a bit of a problem," said the 34-year-old. "Last year I was having a problem coming off the bend. It's just so weird. I don't understand it.

    "It is what it is, such is life."

    Two leaders of far-right group Britain First have been banned from Luton town centre for the next three years.

    Bedfordshire Police were successful in their bid to the High Court which prevents Paul Golding (pictured centre) and Jayda Frensen (pictured filming) also going to Bury Park.

    Police applied for the injunction as they were concerned about the risk of disorder and anti-social behaviour if the pair were allowed into the town.

    It extends an interim hearing which banned them from entering a mosque or Islamic centre without written permission, publishing any words or images likely to stir up religious or racial hatred and using threatening words. 

  7. Airlander 10: Maiden flight delayed at last minutepublished at 14:28 British Summer Time 15 August 2016

    The maiden flight of the world's longest aircraft was postponed at the last minute because of a "technical issue".

    The Airlander 10 - part plane, part airship - was due to take off from Cardington Airfield in Bedfordshire on Sunday.

    It is not known when another attempt at a test flight will be made.

    "It should be good enough to go through and I'm looking forward to it.

    Hertfordshire's Jodie Williams has just run a season's best and finished third in her 200m heat.

    Williams ran in 22.69 seconds. Bulgaria's Ivet Lalova-Collio came in first with 22.61 and Australia's Ella Nelson second with 22.66.

    She'll have to wait and see if she gets through as a fastest loser, as only the top two go through automatically. But it's the fastest of the losers so far, and should see her progress.

    Leighton Buzzard's Charlotte Dujardin is bidding to become the second British woman in the space of three days to claim a third Olympic gold.

    Dujardin has already won silver in the team event and is also the reigning world, European and Commonwealth champion. We're sure she's got room for a few more trophies, though. 

    Dujardin gets under way at 16:40 BST, after compatriots Fiona Bigwood (14:30) and Carl Hester (15:35).

    A 61-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murdering a man at a Buckinghamshire pub has been bailed. 

    The assault happened at the George Inn, Burnham, on Friday night.

    Dean Haveley, 48, was treated at the scene, but died later in hospital.

    A post-mortem examination gave the cause of his death as unascertained, with further tests to come. 

    Detectives have appealed for anyone who was in the pub, or who has information regarding the attack, to contact them.

    A man in his 80s has died on the M1 in Bedfordshire. 

    His car was involved in a crash with a lorry near junction 13 northbound yesterday afternoon.

    The man was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later, police said. Officers have appealed for witnesses.
