    A murder investigation has been launched in Luton after a body was found in a bin near the town centre.

     A member of the public found the body of a man at about 21:00 last night and alerted the police.

    Officers say the body may have been in the bin in Essex Close for several days before it was discovered. 

    One man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being questioned.

    A vulnerable detainee at the Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre in Bedfordshire was raped by one detention officer and engaged in sexual activity with two others, a jury was told today.

    The Roma woman, now 26, was challenging her deportation and did not want to "rock the boat" when she became involved with three officers, Luton Crown Court heard.

    Opening the case, the prosecution said each defendant took advantage of the woman in 2012.   

    Syed Hussain, 34, (pictured below, of Croyland Drive, Elstow, Bedford, denies sexually assaulting the woman on 25 September 2012, orally raping her on 29 November 2012 and misconduct in a public office between 9 September and 4 December 2012 by kissing and sexually touching her.

    A chilly night across the eastern region, with the risk of some showers, particularly in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. 

    Showers will fade overnight to bring mostly clear skies. There will be light to moderate north westerly winds, which will be fresher on the coast. 

    The temperature will fall to a minimum of 8C (46F).

    Tomorrow will start dry with sunny spells.

    Showers will develop - some heavy and thundery.

    I've been out and about in Hemel Hempstead after it was nominated for a "town centre award, external".

    Many people were shocked when I told them about the nomination. Kevin told me: "I don't think so" and added, "I can't understand where you got that from."

    I caught up with Heather outside the Marlowes and she said the area was "coming up and improving".

    Geedjay was very pleased with the news, saying he wasn't "surprised" as it's "peaceful, quiet and relaxing - the best place to be".

    Hemel Hempstead high street has been named as one of the country's best.

    Thousands of people turned out for the The "Heroes' Return", at which Hemel Hempstead's Max Whitlock showed off his impressive gymnastic moves.

    Bedford's Phelan Hill was also there - he's pictured second on the right. 

    He won a gold when he coxed the Men's Eight rowing team to victory.

  11. Motorcyclist killed in crashpublished at 15:51 British Summer Time 18 October 2016

    A motorcyclist has died in a crash in George Green, Buckinghamshire. 

    Emergency services were called yesterday morning at about 11:00 to a report that a motorbike had left the carriageway of the A412 Uxbridge Road.

    Police say the man, in his 40s died at the scene.

    Bedford's very own Ian Midlane is up for a top award. 

    The Doctors star, who plays Dr Al Haskey, has been nominated for best serial drama performance in the National Television Awards, external.

    He says: "I think this is the first time that Doctors has been invited to participate in the NTAs in this way so I'm delighted to be representing them at the big party."

  14. Burglars who targeted Eric Morecambe's widow 'must have known she was away'published at 13:54 British Summer Time 18 October 2016

    The son of late comedian Eric Morecambe says thieves who targeted his mother's Hertfordshire home must have gleaned from the internet that she was out at the time. 

    Joan Bartholomew, 89, had travelled to Blackpool, from her home in Harpenden, for the unveiling of a statue in memory of her late husband and his comic partner Ernie Wise (pictured below).

    Her son told Lancashire newspaper The Visitor, external: "There wasn't masses of damage. 

    "My mum is a very realistic person, she doesn't like to make herself into a victim. It's just the way it is. I guess that's the power of social media, they must have known she was away." 

  15. Ambulance trust says it's working with hospitals to minimise delayspublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 18 October 2016

    We brought you news earlier that the number of patients kept waiting in an ambulance outside hospital A&E departments in the region, has more than tripled in the last two years, according to figures obtained by Labour.

    A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Trust, external says: "Hospital handover delays have a significant impact on us, as it means that an ambulance crew are unable to respond to patients in the community.

    "We continue to work closely with hospitals and commissioners on minimising these delays."

    Bedfordshire Police says only £740 was left in PC Paul Whitehead's account after the man he defrauded of more than £30,000 reported his crimes.

    Whitehead paid £7,767 to debt agencies, spent money on an expensive holiday and lost thousands gambling.      

    Assistant Chief Constable Mike Colbourne said his crimes were "totally unacceptable" and that he had targeted a "vulnerable man". 

    “We expect our officers to act with the utmost integrity so it is particularly disappointing that a member of our workforce has behaved in this way," he said.

    “We simply will not tolerate those who think it is acceptable to take advantage of others."

    A Bedfordshire Police officer has been jailed for defrauding a cleaner out of more than £31,000.

    PC Paul Whitehead, 32 from Buckingham Road, Bletchley, who was based at Luton Police Station, targeted the man after hearing he had inherited money. He claimed he needed the money as a "loan" to help a relative battling alcoholism. 

    He misused the police computer system to find his address, then visited his home and encouraged him to transfer the money.

    Whitehead spent the money on a holiday, debt agencies and gambling.

    He was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court to five years for fraud, six months for computer misuse and one month for failing to appear at a hearing in June, after pleading guilty to the charges. All sentences are to run consecutively.
