  3. Severe traffic delays in Hertfordpublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 19 October 2016

    It's expected that the A119 North Road in Hertford will be closed from Cross Lane to B1000 Welwyn Road for some time after a lorry with skips on it hit a bridge. 

    Hertfordshire Fire Service is at the scene and the bridge is being inspected.

    Network Rail has just confirmed that it received reports at about 08:30 this morning that a skip lorry had struck a bridge in Hertford.

    It says trains are currently running at a reduced speed. 

    Disruption is expected until midday, external on the line between Stevenage and Hertford North.

    A man accused of murdering an elderly woman at her home at Marlow Bottom in Buckinghamshire is due to appear before Reading Crown Court today.

    Tautuydas Narbutas, 23, from High Wycombe has been charged with murdering 81-year-old Albertina Choules in July.

    She died from a head injury and her body was set on fire.

    There are currently delays of up to 15 minutes on Great Northern trains between Hertford North and Stevenage due to a lorry hitting a bridge earlier at Hertford North. 

    Tickets are being accepted on Greater Anglia, London Overground and London Underground services.

    One person has been taken to hospital after a vehicle carrying skips hit a bridge, blocking the A119 North Road in Hertford. 

    Traffic is currently stationary between B1000 Welwyn Road and Beane Road.

    Fire crews from Hertford and Stevenage are attending. They're currently making the scene safe and the bridge is being inspected.

    So far one person has been released from a vehicle.

    There's disruption to train services between Stevenage and Hertford North , externalafter a vehicle carrying skips hit a bridge at the A119 North Road in Hertford. 

    The road is currently blocked. 

    Train disruption is expected till 10:00 as the line is closed, and services are expected to be cancelled or amended.

    Postal workers in Luton and Leagrave are taking strike action today in a dispute over suspensions and workload.

    The 24-hour action by about 250 members of the Communication Workers Union, external (CWU) in Bedfordshire got under way at midnight.

    Union official Neal Kidwell said: "Postal workers are in fear of their jobs and many are routinely doing unpaid overtime to cope with unmanageable workloads because they fear management will not listen to their concerns

    "We realise that strike action will cause disruption to the public, however the CWU believe we have made every reasonable attempt to avoid industrial action through negotiations with the business without success. We will consider further strike action if genuine talks are not offered by management."

    Yesterday we told you that a Bedfordshire Police officer had been jailed for five years for defrauding a cleaner out of more than £31,000.

    Paul Wilson, the man who was targeted by the corrupt officer, has revealed he will never trust anyone again.

    PC Paul Whitehead, 32, was working at Luton Police station when he found out the cleaner had inherited a large amount of money. He started a friendship with Mr Wilson before he encouraged him to withdraw money, much of which was used to feed the officer's gambling habit.

    In his impact statement, Mr Wilson said: "This crime has been horrible... I feel humiliated by what's happened to me because I felt we were friends.

    "I feel he bullied me and it's made me feel anxious about my money."

    Bedfordshire Police has said it wants to reassure the public after a body was found in a bin in Essex Close near Luton town centre on Monday night.

    One man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

    Assistant chief constable Mike Colbourne said such crimes "are worrying" but "very rare".

    "We are following a number of lines of inquiry and I do want to reassure the public that we've got a dedicated team of detectives who will be establishing the circumstances behind the death," he said.

    Officers believe the body may have been in the bin for several days before it was discovered by a member of the public and has asked for anybody who saw anything suspicious in the vicinity in the days before the body was found to contact them.

    An investigation is continuing into the death of a man whose body was found in a bin on a Luton street on Monday night.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning.  

    Police say the body, which was found at about 21:00 in Essex Close, near the town centre, may have been in the bin for several days before it was discovered by a member of the public.

    Officers have said it's a complex investigation and they want to hear from anyone who may have seen anything unusual in and around the area over the last few days.
