  1. Burglars strike at home of Eric Morecambe's widowpublished at 11:20 British Summer Time 18 October 2016

    Police in Hertfordshire are investigating a burglary thought to have taken place at the home of Eric Morecambe's widow in Harpenden. 

    Several newspapers, including The Daily Mirror, external, The Sun, external, and The Express, external report that burglars struck while Joan Bartholomew, 89, was attending the unveiling of a statue of her late husband in Blackpool on Friday.

    Knowing that she was not at home, it's thought thieves raided the house and  took various items of jewellery. 

    The theft is thought to have taken place between 10.30 last Thursday and 17:00 on Saturday.

  2. FA Cup first round draw: Round-uppublished at 11:17 British Summer Time 18 October 2016

    Non-league sides St Albans and Borehamwood have been given home ties against Football League opposition in the first round of the FA Cup. 

    They'll be hoping for a financial boost from television coverage of their clashes with League Two sides, with St Albans at home to Carlisle, and Borehamwood at home to Notts County. 

    Milton Keynes Dons will host Northern Premier Division Spennymoor, who have already won four matches to get this far.

    Luton and Wycombe travel away to fellow League Two sides, the Hatters to Exeter and Wanderers to Portsmouth, with Stevenage away to League One Port Vale. 

    Non-league Chesham face a tough trip to Peterborough, and if Hemel Hempstead win tonight's replay at home to Taunton, they will host Barrow. 

    The games will be played over the first weekend in November.

    It's been a busy two days for Hemel Hempstead's Max Whitlock. 

    Yesterday he was celebrating in Manchester and now he's on his way to London to take part in today's Heroes' Parade.

    It was an early start for him. Here he is about to board the train at Manchester's Piccadilly station.

    When he arrives, 10 red double-decker London buses will transport the Olympic and Paralympic athletes to Trafalgar Square.

    Yesterday more than 150,000 people braved the rain to cheer Great Britain's Olympic and Paralympic stars as they paraded through Manchester to celebrate their record-breaking performances at Rio 2016.

  5. Manchester... thank you!published at 10:00 British Summer Time 18 October 2016

    Yesterday it was the turn of Manchester to cheer our Paralympic and Olympic heroes at a special Victory Parade, but today all eyes will be on London which is hosting the "Heroes Return" event in Trafalgar Square from 13:00. 

    Hemel Hempstead's Max Whitlock was "up North" yesterday and described the day as "amazing".

    Hertfordshire-based Tesco has increased its share of the UK grocery market for the first time since 2011, figures show, highlighting the ongoing recovery of Britain's biggest supermarket.

    According to Kantar Worldpanel, sales grew 1.3% year-on-year in the 12 weeks to 9 October.

    That left Tesco with 28.2% of the UK grocery market, up from 28.1% a year earlier.

    In the 12-week period, sales fell 0.4% at Sainsbury's and 5.2% at Asda.

    Tesco has been struggling with stiff competition from discount retailers and reputational damage from a 2014 accounting scandal.

  7. Driver suffers life-threatening injuries after hitting deerpublished at 09:19 British Summer Time 18 October 2016

    A van driver has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries after his vehicle hit a deer in Hitchin yesterday evening. 

    It happened on the B656 London Road near the turn for St Ippolyts, at about 17:00. 

    The blue VW Caddy van hit the deer which ran into the road, and crashed into a hedge. 

    Hertfordshire Police is appealing for witnesses, external.

  9. Ambulance patients face long A&E delayspublished at 08:41 British Summer Time 18 October 2016

    The number of patients kept waiting in an ambulance for more than an hour outside hospitals in our region has more than tripled in the last two years, according to figures obtained by Labour.

    In the period 2015/2016, figures show that on 13,173 occasions, East of England ambulances had to wait outside our region's hospitals for an hour, compared to 8,658 in the previous year, and 3,729 in 2013/2014.

    Labour has called the figures shocking, but NHS England says it's doing its best to minimise delays.

  16. 'Insultingly low' HS2 compensation offer to be challenged in the Lordspublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 17 October 2016

    £15m allocated to improve communities affected by the high-speed HS2 rail project has been damned as "peanuts" by the leader of Buckinghamshire County Council.

    Martin Tett will appear before the Lords' High Speed Rail Select Committee next Monday.

    The money is to be shared between five counties - Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire.

    Mr Tett said: "When taken in the context of the misery HS2's construction will cause residents over a 10-year period, this amount really is peanuts.

    "It will have virtually no impact."
