    A crowdfunding campaign to raise £100,000 for a statue to honour David Bowie has reached its target ahead of the deadline tomorrow morning.

    Bowie's world debuts of Hunky Dory & Ziggy Stardust were at Friars Aylesbury, plans will now go ahead for a musical bronze statue that will play a different Bowie hit on the hour, every hour.

    If campaigners hadn't reached the target the project wouldn't have received a penny.

  2. Witnesses appeal following attempted rapepublished at 13:36 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2016

    British Transport Police are appealing for witnesses and information following an attempted rape at Bedford rail station early yesterday morning. The incident happened at around between 01:00 and 04:00.

    Officers came across a 36-year-old man who sitting outside the station with a head injury. The man states he was followed by two men away from the station who attempted to rape him. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

    Det Insp Paul Watts said: "Thankfully incidents of this nature are rare. The victim is being supported by specially trained officers and an investigation is under way. I would urge anyone with any information to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 citing reference 192 of 05/12/16."  

  3. Tributes to former Bedford Modern Pupil found dead in the Alpspublished at 12:39 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2016

    Family and friends of Matt Smith, the former Bedford Modern pupil found dead yesterday morning on an Oxbridge Ski-ing trip, have been paying tribute to him on Facebook.

    His brother Harry was among the first, saying: "I love you so much, Matt. Rest well above the clouds."

    Glenn Tamkin, another former Bedford Modern boy and a fellow rower, also posted a picture of the two friends together writing, "What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose - I love you so much man RIP <3"

    Matt left Bedford Modern in 2013 and went to study history at St John's College, Oxford. According to his LinkedIn profile he was a qualified snowboard instructor and had been the college rep on the Varsity ski trip in 2015.

    He was also played rugby and rowed for the college.

    His body was found at accommodation in the ski resort on Sunday morning. An investigation is under way into how he died.

    Matt Smith, the 22-year-old Oxford undergraduate found dead at the Val Thorens resort in the Alps on Sunday morning, was a former pupil at Bedford Modern.

    He was attending the annual Oxford and Cambridge Varsity ski trip, which was first held in 1921 when he was discovered by friends.

    Oxford University said: "We would like to express our deep sadness at the tragic death."

    It added: "[We] send our condolences to his family and friends.

    "While we await the findings of the official investigation we are offering support to students who may have been affected."

    Police are continuing to question a man arrested on suspicion of murder following an incident at the Grafton Hotel on Midland Road in Bedford. 

    A 48-year -old man was allegedly assaulted in bar at the hotel at 23.30 on Saturday night. He died several hours later in hospital. 

    Bedfordshire Police are still appealing for witnesses.

  8. Aylesbury Prison: The longest time when 'doing time'published at 11:08 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2016

    A report from the Howard League for Penal Reform , externalhas named HMP Aylesbury as the jail which adds more time to prisoners' sentences than any other in England and Wales.  

    On average, across the public and private prison estate, two additional days of imprisonment were handed down per person imprisoned in 2015 - at Aylesbury it was 22 days more.

    The campaign group, which used Ministry of Justice figures for its research, says that would have cost the prison service an extra £1m.

    A 48-year-old man has died after an alleged assault at the Grafton Hotel in Midland Road, Bedford. He was taken to hospital at 23:30 on Saturday, but died several hours later.

    A 39-year-old man has been arrested and is in custody. 

    Witnesses to the incident in the bar area of the hotel are asked to contact Bedfordshire Police.

    This driver had already passed two junctions of the A1M before he was stopped by police in Hertfordshire.

    They'd been alerted by several other motorists who presumably realised that a car really should have four tyres... unless your driving a Robin Reliant, external.

    The Nissan Micra was pulled over near Stevenage at 19.20 on Saturday night.

    Herts Police say three vehicles have been involved in a collision near junction 5 of the M1 southbound, the B462, Hartspring Lane. It happened just before 07:00, two of the three lanes were closed.

    Two people were taken to Watford General, a man in his 20s with neck pain and a man in his 40s with chest pain. Their injuries are not described as serious.
