    Doctors have taught blood cells to recognise liver cancer in a revolutionary combination treatment. 

    The "super vaccine" fights the disease while patients receive chemotherapy as well. 

    The therapy is being carried out at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital after five years of regulatory hurdles. 

    Liver cancer is notoriously difficult to treat, and although still rare, it is on the increase, doctors at the hospital said.

  3. Rail: 'Birmingham's gain will be Coventry's loss'published at 11:59 British Summer Time 25 July 2016

    A campaign to ensure there are at least three fast trains in Coventry is under way amid fears of cuts to make way for speedier services to Birmingham, external.

    Jim O'Boyle, Coventry City Council's cabinet member for jobs and regeneration, said he would not support a reduction in stops at Coventry in any InterCity West Coast services. He's been speaking in response to the government's consultation on the franchise.

    "It's not acceptable that we could see fewer trains stopping at Coventry to speed up the connection between London and Birmingham,” he said, saying a well-connected Coventry had a "critical role" in job creation.

    A World War One soldier has been honoured 100 years after he "demonstrated immense bravery".

    Cpl Joseph Davis, from Tipton in the Black Country, won the Victoria Cross (VC).

    Wounded himself and with eight injured officers, he led his reserve to safety in the Battle of the Somme.

  10. Water park death: Police seek video footagepublished at 09:55 British Summer Time 25 July 2016

    Two people arrested after a five-year-old boy died in a suspected drowning at a water park have been released on police bail.  

    The boy, named locally as Charlie Dunn, from Tamworth, was pulled from the Blue Lagoon at Bosworth Water Park in Leicestershire on Saturday afternoon.

    He died later in hospital and a man and woman were arrested.

    Police said the pair had been bailed "pending further inquires", adding an investigation was "ongoing".  

    Officers are urging witnesses and anyone with video footage taken at the park to come forward.

    Sir Philip Green and others who "got rich" from BHS have been blamed for the retailer's collapse in what MPs called the "unacceptable face of capitalism".

    Sir Philip's failure to resolve BHS's pension deficit was a major factor in the firm's demise, the report added.

    A UKIP leadership hopeful and West Midlands MEP is calling for hardline prison reform - and wants inmates to pay £40,000 a year for their stay.

    Bill Etheridge is calling for a string of changes, although he admitted to BBC WM his proposal would only work if convicts had assets.

    He has also admitted he has never been inside a jail.

    Jails "would probably work for people like him," he said, despite comments last week that prisons should be about "punishment rather than rehabilitation".
