It is hoped a device being developed by researchers at the University of Birmingham could diagnose serious brain injuries much earlier and save the NHS money.
A team have been working on a new blood test - which could be done by paramedics - at the scene of an accident to work out if there is any risk to their brain.
Dr Pola Goldberg Oppenheimer, from the school of chemical engineering, has been leading the team, which has worked closely with Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
She said it was a "finger prick blood test at the point of injury" and the idea would be for all ambulances to be equipped with the device to take readings at the scene and eventually, this could be used at pitch side to detect how serious sport injuries are.
