The way police handle hate crime is to be reviewed after a sharp rise in incidents following the EU referendum.
The Home Secretary Amber Rudd will ask Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary to carry out the review.
There were more than 6,000 reports to the police since the middle of June - which is up by a fifth compared to the same time last year.
In the West Midlands, the region's force said last month the average number of reports had remained at a similar level since April, despite national figures showing an increase.
