  4. Police officer who hit 'crocodile' detainee 12 times is cleared of assaultpublished at 17:43 British Summer Time 23 September 2016

    A police custody sergeant who said he hit a detainee 12 times in the head and face to ensure his own safety and that of colleagues has been cleared of assault.

    Jason Hayles, 44, had been charged in connection with restraining Clinton Copeland, 30, at Stechford police station, Birmingham, last year - efforts he described in court as being akin to grappling with a crocodile.

    Mr Hayles said he had gone "nuclear" on Mr Copeland as it was his "only option". He was unanimously cleared of assault causing actual bodily harm following a four-day trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

    Tony Pulis is set to celebrate his 1000th match as a manager when his West Brom side travels to former club Stoke tomorrow.

    "You couldn't have scripted it better to be honest, the fact that I'm going back to Stoke," says Pulis, who managed the Potters for 464 matches over two spells.

    He adds: "It's fantastic. Whichever way the result goes, my 1,000th game will be at Stoke and I had great times there.

    "Everything changes so quickly. A couple of games and Stoke could be two-thirds of the way up the table. What you've got to do, and I don't have to tell Mark how to manage, is to keep your feet on the ground. Keep looking ahead, keep pointing ahead and hope that things change."

    A former Birmingham city councillor who has died has been described by colleagues as a "committed" and "kind" man who "campaigned tirelessly". 

    Long-serving Labour member Reg Corns stood down at last year's local elections after 47 years at Birmingham City Council.

    Among his efforts, fellow politicians say, was the battle for recognition of youngsters in the 1930s who were shipped off from UK children's homes to Australia and Canada to work on farms.

    A sex offender who took up-skirt photos of women on buses and trains was caught when police spotted his distinctive jacket on YouTube, police say, external.

    Robert Osbourne, 41, assaulted five women on public transport across the West Midlands in an eight-month period dating back to 2013 - sometimes taking pictures, British Transport Police said, up their skirts.

    CCTV from one offence showed him wearing a black jacket with the "distinctive logo" of a biker charity on the back. Enquiries based on the insignia led police to YouTube videos featuring Dudley man Osbourne in the same item of clothing.

    He admitted in May four counts of sexual assault and one of common assault. Today police spoke of his "disgusting behaviour" after he was sentenced on Wednesday at Wolverhampton Crown Court to four years in prison with an extended period of four years on licence.  

    Det Con Dan Hart said: "Osbourne’s disgusting behaviour not only left these women feeling deeply uncomfortable, when his actions escalated into assault, one victim described how she was paralysed with fear."

    Aston Villa fans will stand and clap in the seventh minute of the game at home to Newcastle tomorrow to remember a young fan from Shropshire who died last month. 

    Jack Edwards from Cleobury Mortimer was just seven years old when he passed away.

    Jack's stepdad, Brad Topham said he was a "lovely kid who never stopped smiling", despite his three-year battle against Leukaemia, and that most of the family would be at the game.

  14. Police investigate 'bogus' antiques callpublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 23 September 2016

    Police are investigating reports of a bogus caller in the Tamworth area claiming to represent antiques dealers.

    A man, described as being in his 50s with dark hair and around 5’9", offered to buy antique jewellery and collectables from a resident in Roach, police said. 

    However, upon further investigation, businesses confirmed they had no links to anyone looking to purchase antiques door-to-door.

  15. Football: Pulis having a 'grand' timepublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 23 September 2016

    West Bromwich Albion head coach Tony Pulis takes charge of his 1000th match as a football manager when the club faces Stoke City this weekend. 

    The 58-year-old is the 25th manager in modern English football to reach the landmark. 

    He'll be inducted into the League Managers' Association Hall of Fame, external at the end of the season.
