  3. Complaints about West Midlands Police to the IPCCpublished at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2016

    Alex Homer
    BBC Local Live

Don Lorenzo has battled for years to pursue his claims that he was assaulted and racially abused by officers as he was arrested at his Edgbaston home in November 2007.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission took up his case in June 2013 and looked into both his arrest and an internal investigation by the West Midlands force, which said its officers had no case to answer.

The most recent statistics from the IPCC show that in nearly one in two cases, the watchdog disagrees with the force’s conclusions after it investigates itself.

Complaints about West Midlands Police to IPCC

It also took the force the longest time out of any in England and Wales to resolve complaints in 2014-15 - on average it took 205 days compared to the quickest turnaround of 52 days. It had risen from 120 days in the previous year for West Midlands Police.

The force, the second largest in England, has previously put this down to having one of the smallest professional standards departments proportionally, as it has prioritised filling "frontline" roles as funds have been cut.
