  5. Football: Scoring West Brom winger took being dropped 'on chin'published at 17:47 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

    West Brom winger Matt Phillips says he took being dropped "on the chin" before returning to get the winner at Leicester on Sunday. 

    It was Phillips' first goal for the Baggies since being left on the bench for the previous weekend's defeat to Manchester City.

    In other Albion news, teammate James McClean was absent from training with the Republic of Ireland and is being assessed after undergoing a scan on a back problem.

  6. Road improvement work for 'accident' areapublished at 17:44 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

    Work will start next week on a six-figure scheme to boost safety on a road in Sandwell.

    Sandwell Council says it will , externalspend £100,000 to "reduce accidents" at the junction of Wolverhampton Road and Titford Road, Oldbury.

    The scheme follows 15 crashes in the five years to 2015, resulting in 24 people being hurt, five seriously. 

    The work - introducing new lights - starts on Monday and will last about three months.

    A fireworks display that prompted more than 300 complaints will be investigated. 

    Sandwell Council says an independent report will address "what went wrong" and look into the planning of its Bonfire Night event.

    People took to Sandwell Council's Facebook, external page following the display at Dartmouth Park in West Bromwich to complain about long queues and 'crushing'.

    "It was chaos," said one visitor.

    A bus caught fire this morning in Walsall.

    Talk about the right place at the right time - it was put out, bus operator Arriva said, by a nearby resident who happened to have her own extinguisher.

    An Arriva spokesperson said: "We’re grateful to her for her help and quick thinking."

  17. Coming up on Midlands Today: Independent shops in the West Midlandspublished at 13:21 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

    More independent shops have opened in the West Midlands than anywhere else in the country during the first half this year.  

    That's according to the British Independent Retailers Association. 

    Its figures show there was growth in leisure outlets including restaurants and cafes, but a decline in fashion stores and newsagents.

    A Birmingham charity shop with a twist gets its official opening this afternoon. 

    The Penny Appeal store on Ladypool Road claims to be the first charity shop where everything inside is just 99p.

    All profits will go to various global projects.
