    The recruitment of hundreds of new West Midlands Police officers is to begin on 21 November.

    The force, which looking to enlist 800 officers by 2020, says more than 10,000 people have already registered their interest in joining the force.

    In addition, it plans to take on 150 police community support officers and 200 specialist staff over three years.

    Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said the recruitment was possible following an efficiency drive.

    Two police cars were sent to the home of a boy whose teachers thought a piece of brass he had taken to school could be a bullet.

    Officers were contacted by St Edward's Catholic Primary School in Birmingham after a pupil alerted teachers to the seven-year-old's claims that the brass cylinder was "a bullet" for a rifle.

    The school said it apologised to the boy's mother for any distress caused and the safeguarding and wellbeing of pupils was paramount. It added the boy's Islamic faith was not an issue, saying: "Historically there have been disclosures made of a similar nature, from children who were not from Muslim families and the same course of action has been taken."

    A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "Officers will always thoroughly investigate any reports of unlawful guns and ammunition that are reported in the community."

  10. Clothes show to move from Birminghampublished at 09:51 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

    After almost three decades at the NEC, the Clothes Show will move to Liverpool from next year. 

    Next month's event will be the last one held at the NEC. 

    Event organisers say the decision is down to the audience "looking for a new experience" and hope the switch to the north will allow for a more festival-like experience, taking in locations across the city.

    They say the new-look event will be held over three days in July.

  12. Nearly half of Ladywood children living in povertypublished at 09:06 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

    Nearly half of the children in the Ladywood area of Birmingham are living in poverty - the highest rate in the UK, according to new figures.  

    The End Child Poverty, external coalition says child poverty in the constituency is at 47.3%, with Birmingham Hodge Hill and Birmingham Hall Green at 43.7% and 40.5% respectively.

    It means Birmingham is among the local authorities with the worst figures in the country, with 37.4% of children in the city experiencing poverty. 

    End Child Poverty says conditions are affecting 34.9% of children in Sandwell and 34.6% in Wolverhampton.
