    John Clancy, the leader of Birmingham City Council, says a report predicting a big budget deficit also acknowledges the authority has made "considerable progress" towards tackling its problems.

    A government-appointed review panel predicts "flawed" planning and "unrealistic" proposals will lead to a £49m budget shortfall this year.

    John Clancy says the report recognises the extent of the "extremely challenging circumstances facing the council", and says these are made more difficult by "year-on-year cuts to government grant allocations".

    Fire crews from Aston and Perry Barr tackled this dramatic fire on the M6 northbound earlier this morning. 

    The car was on the hard shoulder of the motorway between J6-7. 

    A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said 10 firefighters attended that blaze that "100% completely destroyed" the vehicle.

    Walsall were already through, but landed the top spot in their group by winning 1-0 at Leicester. 

    Albion's Under-21s were already out and finished the competition with a 2-0 home defeat to Gillingham.

    Birmingham City Council will have overspent by £49m pounds this year, according to an improvement panel set up in January 2015 by the government to look at the way the authority is run. 

    The chair of the panel, John Crabtree, has written to the government saying the council's progress has been "slow" and that its financial situation is "serious".
