Sir Lenny Henry will say "education is a right, not an accident of birth" when he formally accepts his role as Chancellor of Birmingham City University later.
The writer, actor and comedian, 58, will talk about his belief growing up that education was "not intended for the likes of me".
It was announced in July that he would take on the role.
Sir Lenny completed a degree course at the age of 46. In his inaugural speech at the university this evening he will highlight the transformative impact of education and what he hopes to achieve in his role over the next five years.
Unseen CCTV footage has been released by police hunting, external the killer of a man who died following a street attack that left him with severe head injuries eight years ago.
The footage shows David Weaver's last known movements at the Hare and Hounds pub, on Marsh Hill, Erdington, on 22 November 2008. The father-of-one was attending a memorial event for a family member there, police say, when a fight broke out and spilled onto the street.
David was seen in a group of people in the venue's entrance before going outside. He was found close by with severe head injuries that hospitalised him for five months before he died aged 45.
DS Nick Walton, lead in the original investigation, said people were reluctant in 2008 to tell police what they knew.
He said: "We are hoping that now, eight years on, people have moved on in their lives and maybe there was something they were not able to reveal back then, but might be able to tell us now."

There's a campaign for people to attend the funeral of an RAF veteran from Olton.
Flight Sergeant Harry Arrowsmith died at the age of 91 and his funeral is taking place on Thursday.
His wife died a few years ago and the only family he has is his sister.
Close family friend Steve Warren was worried Harry wouldn't have a proper send off, so he launched a social media appeal, external to get more people to attend.
A candlelit vigil was held last night to mark the 42nd anniversary of the Birmingham pub bombings.
The 21 people who died were posthumously awarded freedom of the city.
Birmingham Library lit up yesterday as part of the memorial events.

This year has taken on particular significance in the Birmingham pub bombings story - in June it was announced inquests into the deaths of those killed in the blasts would be reopened and today the victims were posthumously awarded freedom of the city.
That's because today marks the 42nd anniversary of the atrocities. A service at St Philip's Cathedral in the city is under way.

Staff at a struggling children's services department could strike over plans for it to be taken over by a trust.
The union Unison said its members in Sandwell Council's children's services had given a "huge mandate" for a formal strike ballot over "being privatised".
It was announced in October that a government-appointed trust would take over the department - rated inadequate in June last year.
A vote on strike action could take place in the new year.
