Data from the Press Association suggests the £4,841,108 collected by Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) during the period is the highest amount in England.

The trust runs Heartlands Hospital, Solihull Hospital and Good Hope Hospital. The report says the majority of the sum - £3,465,357 - came from patients and visitors, staff paid £1,375,751 and an additional £40,000 was collected in car park fines.

The chief executive of the Patients Association says it's unfair that hospital parking in Wales and Scotland is largely free, while patients in England have to pay. HEFT said the fees did not generate profit.

We are a large trust covering three hospitals, with over 1m patients visiting us every year and 11,000 staff. The Trust does not take any form of profit from car parking charges income as it is used to fund capital charges, utility costs, security and a car parking management service, as well as the upkeep, maintenance and investment in the car parks which includes CCTV systems, grounds, and road safety."
