    It's taken 66 days, crossing the most inhospitable terrain on the planet. 

    Facing temperatures of -50C, six army reservists from the Midlands, external have completed a 1,100 mile traverse of Antarctica, a feat only ever achieved by a handful of people.

    Among them, Dr Jamie Facer who is based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. He and his team raised £100,000 for The Soldiers' Charity with their trek on foot.

  4. Man undergoes surgery after Birmingham shootingpublished at 17:43 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    A man was shot in Winson Green, Birmingham, last night.

    Police say he "suffered a shotgun injury to his lower leg and has since undergone surgery to remove the pellets". His condition is described as "not life-threatening". 

    It happened in Bernard Place at 20:00. The road was sealed off to allow forensics experts to investigate the scene.

    CCTV inquiries are progressing.

  5. Libraries awarded £91k for South Asian exhibitionpublished at 17:27 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    The Library of Birmingham and British Library are teaming up, external for a project celebrating South Asian culture in the city.

    The National Lottery has given £91,000 to a major exhibition, allowing events and workshops to take place over the year.

    A series of photographic portraits covering 70 years will also go on display.

    A woman's been attacked in her home with a wooden stick during a burglary in Tamworth, external

    The break-in happened on Saturday night in Robinia, Amington say Staffordshire Police, when three people in balaclavas got in and stole cash, bank cards and electronic equipment.

    The force say the 41-year-old woman suffered a minor injury but didn’t need hospital treatment. 

    Detectives say they later found a transit van used in the incident and a 24-year-old man's been arrested and released on bail.

    Candidates have been confirmed for a local by-election in Dudley on 16 February.

    It’s for one of three seats in the council ward of St Thomas which is vacant after Labour’s Glenis Simms resigned citing personal reasons.  , external

    She gained headlines back in 2014 after switching from the Conservatives, saying she no longer felt at home in David Cameron’s party and claimed she’d been prevented trying to become an MP outside the West Midlands because of her accent.

    Simms held a majority of 2,041, healthy in local election terms, but when a different seat was contested in the same ward last year, Labour had a majority of just 1,030.

    A man who died in a crash in Lichfield's been described as "an incredible dad" and "a caring son, grandson and brother". 

    Staffordshire Police have this afternoon named Andrew Dennis, 41, from Tamworth as the victim of the fatal two-vehicle crash on Friday on the A51 Tamworth Road.

    His wife Hannah's released a statement saying her husband gave their three children "a great start in life". 

    She adds that he had a "huge impact" on the lives of many children in various schools in Tamworth over the years.

    Two men have been arrested after a village grocers was robbed of cash in Staffordshire., external

    It happened on Friday evening at the Day Today, Brownshore Lane, Essington, say Staffordshire Police.

    They say men went into the store, threatened the shop assistant and left with cash from the till, leaving her unharmed. 

    The two men from Wolverhampton have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and given bail. 

    Officers say they're still keen to find a third person, thought to be involved.

    A cancer charity has launched a week-long campaign reminding women not to avoid having a smear test.

    Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust launched "Cervical Cancer Prevention Week" yesterday. The charity says one in four women do not get the potentially life-saving test done.

    The Heart of England NHS Trust says it one of the most common cancers in women under 35.
