    The Liberal Democrats' candidate to become the first elected Mayor of the West Midlands says she doesn’t think people voting to leave the EU in this region "thought through all the implications of a very complex set of factors".

    Launching her campaign, Beverley Nielsen put keeping access to the EU single market a core part of her strategy, arguing that jobs in the region depended on it. Voters in the council areas which will elect the Mayor returned a majority to leave in the EU referendum in July. 

    Ms Nielson also announced a £1bn "human goldmine" fund to help young people into work with measures like free bus travel for the under-25s and a regularly-published scorecard on her performance if elected in May.  

    Andrew Street is running for the Conservatives, Sion Simon is the Labour candidate, James Burn is running on a Green party ticket and Pete Durnell represents the UKIP bid.

  10. Tenth man arrested in probe into killing of Ibrahim Ismailpublished at 16:27 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2017

    A 10th person has been arrested in connection with a fatal street stabbing, police say, external.  

    Ibrahim Ismail was found dead outside Raxo Shisha lounge in Moseley Street, Highgate, Birmingham, at about 03:30 on 17 December last year. He was 23.

    On 18 January, six men and a woman were arrested on suspicion of being involved in disorder that led to the killing. 

    It followed the arrest of men aged 23 and 24 earlier this month. All nine have been bailed.

    The tenth suspect is a 24-year-old man, arrested at an address in Handsworth earlier.

    Wearing an EEG monitor strapped to his head, Daniel Raven-Ellison collected millions of snapshots of the activity in his brain as he crossed 69 cities over seven months in the UK from June last year.

    Its software provided metrics on how stressed, relaxed, excited, focused, interested and engaged he was during his walks.

    He said he loved "Dudley with its hills and great views".

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife after a woman's body was found in a car on a Lidl car park.

    The couple were reported missing before police traced a vehicle to the store in Mackadown Lane, Tile Cross, Birmingham, at about 04:45 GMT.

    They discovered a man and a woman inside. The woman was confirmed dead at the scene and the 42-year-old man was arrested, police said.

  16. Football: Pulis rules out Albion moves for Ivanovic and Wilsonpublished at 14:13 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2017

    West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Pulis has ruled out moves for Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic and Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson - two players with whom the club had been linked in the press.

    Pulis said be believed the link with the Baggies and Ivanovic had gathered credence as he was spotted by TV cameras sitting in the stands to watch the FA Cup game between the Blues and Brentford on Saturday.

    He was however there to see some of Chelsea's younger players, including forward Ruben Loftus-Cheek, defender Kurt Zouma and others at Brentford that "had been mentioned", Pulis said.

    He also confirmed he had phoned Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe to check whether Wilson was available but was told "no chance". He said he expected any further business by the Baggies in this window to be in the form of loan deals.

    A Darlaston statue is so neglected it looks "more like the Jolly Green Giant than a heroic emblem of our nation", a councillor claims.

    The Saint George statue is on the edge of The Green - an "apt" location Doug James says, also likening the statue, which has become covered in moss, to something from "a fancy dress monster party".

    Mr James said "perhaps uncertainty" over who was responsible for its upkeep may have led to neglect.

    He said he would be approaching the parish church, St Lawrence Church, and the Arts Council, to see what could be done to improve the situation.
