  9. Builders fear impact of council's Clean Air Zones policypublished at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2017

Builders in Birmingham fear their businesses will be hit hard by plans to try to clean up air quality in the city.

Last October, the council approved its Clean Air Zones policy which will fine companies that pollute and add to emissions through their trucks and HGVs.

The new restrictions are to come into force by 2020.

Builders Merchants Federation's (BMF) West Midlands chair, Neil Lawrence, who is managing director of Gibbs and Dandy, said his business relied on HGV lorries and flatbed trucks and he hoped the council would consider alternatives to fines and access restrictions.

John Newcomb, managing director of the BMF, said: "We question the fairness in allowing different cities to adopt different criteria, such as excluding private cars from the charges.

"We believe that instead of the proposed policy, better traffic management locally should be emphasised to bring about lower emissions levels, alongside steps to discourage the parking of diesel cars in zones."

Tony Brien, who was abused from age 12, said he felt senior figures at the club pressed him not to pursue the matter.

Then-assistant manager, Dave Richardson, strongly denies any role in deterring Mr Brien from going public.
